Whilst we were in The Lake District last week we visited The World of Beatrix Potter. It is located in Bowness-On-Windermere and there is a car park across the road. It is pay and display but it isn’t overpriced and if you are like me and never have change on you, the machine takes debit/credit cards.
The entrance nearest to the Rayrigg Road car park is up some steep steps but if you are less mobile or taking a pram in with you, there is another entrance round the corner on Crag Brow. The entrance fee is also a lot more reasonable than I expected. It is £6.95 for an adult, £3.65 for a child and under 2s are free.
As you walk into the attraction from the Rayrigg Road entrance there is a tea room on your left, we didn’t go in but the food smelt delightful and the room liked bright and airy. There are regular events held throughout the year, including Peter Rabbit tea parties. We will definitely be returning next year when Lucas is old enough for that.
To start the tour you go into a cinema room and watch a short film about Beatrix Potter and about how her stories began. The film is only about 5 minutes long so it isn’t too long for children to sit through.
Once the film finishes, the doors open into The World of Beatrix Potter…from stepping through the door it is just magical. You walk through at your own pace, wandering from book to book meeting all the characters along the way. Each set of the exhibition is done to perfection, the intrinsic detailing is just fabulous.
There is a virtual walk through the countryside and an interactive timeline depicting Beatrix Potters life. There is a beautiful outdoor area with Mr. McGregors garden, complete with Peter Rabbits blue jacket on a scarecrow.
There is an area where you can have your photo taken with a scene from one of the books to take away as a souvenir and children also get given a trail book and pencil to fill in as they go along. When they return the pencil at the end they are given a Peter Rabbit sticker.
As with most attractions, the tour ends in the gift shop. We purchased a door plaque and a Peter Rabbit book for Lucas. I also bought a souvenir guide book to put in his memory box.
The World of Beatrix Potter is definitely worth a visit and one that I will be doing again, I think with the amount of detailing in every part there will always be something you didn’t notice the first time. It truly brings Beatrix Potters imagination to life x
I may be on maternity leave but I can never turn off completely, I love that parking can be reserved in the courtyard of the Crag Brow entrance for those in wheel chairs or mobility issues.
This needs to be arranged in advance but you can also take a touch tour with a member of staff guiding you through. The tour comes to life in a three dimensional exhibition with different aromas making it an evocative and tactile experience for blind or partially sighted visitors x

This looks so cool, definitely a place that I would love to go and visit with my girls. My eldest love Peter the Rabbit so this would be perfect place to take her. It is very far from us but I guess we could visit some day as I haven’t been in The Lake District yet. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂 x
