We spent a long weekend at Center Parcs Les Landes de Gascogne to celebrate my 40th birthday, arriving on Friday afternoon and heading home on Monday evening. It turned out to be one of those trips that felt genuinely easy as a family, relaxed, fun, and full of little moments that everyone enjoyed.
We stayed in a Comfort Cottage, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like a proper break from routine without any stress or rushing around.
A Comfortable Base for Family Life
Our Comfort Cottage worked really well for our family of four. It had two bedrooms, one double and one twin, and a bright open-plan living space where we could cook, eat, and relax together.
The kitchen setup was better than expected. While many French holiday accommodations don’t include a full oven, ours had a hob and a microwave oven, which was more than enough for proper meals. Over the weekend, we cooked everything from steak dinners to chicken curry, and it felt much easier (and calmer) than eating out every day with children.
To keep costs down, we did a food shop at Leclerc, just a 10-minute drive away. What we spent on shopping for the whole weekend would barely have covered one restaurant meal for four, something worth knowing if you’re visiting as a family.
Aqua Mundo: Where We Spent Most of Our Time
Unsurprisingly, Aqua Mundo became the heart of our weekend. Having unlimited access included with the stay made it easy to pop in whenever we felt like it, rather than planning around set times.
There’s something for every age:
- Smaller slides and splash areas for younger children
- Bigger slides and the wild river for older kids and adults
- A lazy river that everyone can enjoy together
Morgana loved the children’s slides and play areas, while Lucas was happiest racing down the bigger slides and drifting through the wild river. The lazy river was a favourite for all four of us, slow, fun, and perfect for shared laughs.
One of the highlights was floating through to the outdoor pool, which was beautifully warm even though the air temperature outside was cold. That contrast made it feel extra special.
Is the Photo Pass Worth It?
Before we arrived, I considered buying the Photo Pass, which is cheaper when purchased in advance (around €69). In the end, I didn’t buy it because I wasn’t quite sure what it covered, and I’m glad I waited.
During our stay, photos were mainly available on the waterslides, but the cameras on both the race slide and the crazy river weren’t working. I only saw a professional photographer once, in the pool area, so it may be that there are more photographers around during the busier summer months.
We did have photos taken on the Anaconda slide, and instead of buying the full pass, we chose individual photo products. We bought two keyrings and two fridge magnets, one of Lucas and Dan together, and one of Lucas and me. The total cost was €17, which felt like excellent value and gave us some lovely keepsakes from the weekend.
Activities That Worked Well With Kids
One thing Center Parcs does particularly well is offering free and low-pressure activities alongside the bookable ones.
Morgana loved the play areas, and we found two outdoor playgrounds as well as one big indoor play space. We also went to:
- The kids’ disco
- Story-time sessions
- Face painting (twice!)
All of these were included and easy to join, which made a big difference when travelling with children.
For my birthday evening, we booked bowling, which cost €40 for an hour and was great fun for all of us.
Lucas and I also booked the family spa for some quieter time together. At €14 each for an hour, it felt like good value. We used the sauna, steam room, salt room, calm bath, and jacuzzi, and there were plenty of loungers to relax on afterwards, plus water, juice, and detox tea.
Visiting the Farm
We also walked up to the farm area, which the children really enjoyed. They loved being able to see the animals and walk around the goats.
Unfortunately, the birds were kept inside their aviaries due to bird flu restrictions in the area, but it was still a lovely, gentle activity that didn’t feel rushed or overwhelming.
Eating In, With Options Nearby
Although there are restaurants and cafés on site, we mostly chose to eat in our cottage. We did grab lunch out once, hot dogs and chips, but otherwise enjoyed relaxed meals at “home”.
I did attempt to order Pad Thai on our first evening, which was advertised on the menu, but was told that the kitchen was closed. That aside, having the flexibility to self-cater made the whole weekend feel calmer and more affordable.
Why This Weekend Worked So Well for Us
What really stood out about this trip was how easy it felt. There was no pressure to do everything, no long drives once we arrived, and no constant planning. The children could enjoy themselves freely, and we could relax knowing everything was close by.
For a family birthday weekend, it struck the perfect balance between fun, rest, and togetherness, and it’s definitely a type of break I’d consider again.
