Ways to Create a Safe and Fun Outdoor Living Space

Creating an outdoor space that all the family will enjoy can be difficult without the right inspiration. Finding ideas that are both fun and safe for all ages requires some planning. There are many safety issues to consider when you have young children, but your garden can be the ideal place for them to play safely and relax around family and friends. Here are some ideas of how you can incorporate stylish, fun, and safe décor and accessories into your outdoor living space to create the perfect family environment.

Decent Dining

Outdoor dining is one of the greatest family pastimes. We can make many memories over a good meal, so ensuring you have an appropriate outdoor dining area is the first step in creating the perfect outdoor living space. Remember to design the area with everyone in mind, this means thinking about potential hazardous scenarios and putting things in place to prevent them. If you’re thinking of installing a barbecue, pizza oven, or other outdoor cooking equipment, it’s a good idea to create a safe path to the dining area. You should also consider a safety barrier to put around hot areas such as barbecues to stop children from getting too close.

Stylish Seating

Seating is hugely important when it comes to making an area desirable and comfortable and a place for kids to lounge around. If you want your family or guests to spend a good amount of time in the outdoor space, then you must provide a great place to sit. Outdoor furniture can be uncomfortable and relying on simple wooden or plastic chairs for long periods isn’t ideal. Consider bringing the comfort of indoors outdoors by investing in a sofa especially for your garden. Sofas can easily be covered when not in use and offer the most comfort. You don’t have to spend much on a sofa, but it’s a good idea to avoid light colours to minimise dirt collection. Some sofas are also easy to wipe clean, which is great if you have kids, so keep this in mind when you’re shopping. If you don’t know where to start, Home of Cozy has some great reviews and recommendations. Another option is having a hammock with a stand.

Fun Features

If you want to keep your children entertained in your garden, then the best way to do this is to install some fun features. This can be anything from trampolines, playhouses, and climbing frames to any other play equipment for bored children. However, if you’re seeking something unique, investing in fun playground equipment can give your yard an edge while ensuring hours of amusement for the little ones. This could include a mini rock climbing wall, a spiral slide, or an outdoor Gorilla playset. If you don’t want your garden to become taken over by play equipment, you could invest in some outdoor games that are easy to pack away when not in use. Another great idea (if you have a tree) is to build a treehouse, as treehouses are a good solution to providing a play area that doesn’t impose on your outdoor living space.

Shaded Space

A covered area in our outdoor space allows everyone to hide from the elements when necessary. Sometimes you’ll want to sit outside on a summer’s day but not want direct sun exposure, or you may need to shelter quickly from a rain shower. If you’re planning on spending the days outside with your children, then you’ll need somewhere for them to shelter from the sun. The best-sheltered areas allow protection from sun, wind, and rain, but if you’re in an area that doesn’t get a lot of rain, then a frame covered with a light fabric can be enough. If you typically get heavy rain showers in your area, then a more waterproof solution like a gazebo is a better option. Some people choose to create sheltered areas using natural products such as logs, branches, or plants to improve their garden space.

Luxury Lighting

Many people underestimate the power of lighting, particularly when it comes to outdoor spaces, it’s also a big safety feature if you have kids running around in the dark. Get your lighting right and you can create an ambient cozy space everyone will want to spend time in when the sun goes down. To keep your outdoor space safe for kids, make sure that you light your paths and any areas that could be dangerous after dark. Choosing warm-coloured lights will make the space more appealing and create a feeling of cosiness and luxury. Lighting can make a real difference to the feel of your garden at night and make it a much more desirable space to spend your time.

Pleasant Plants

Outdoor spaces should reflect the wonders of nature. Consider including plants that are both bright and fragrant. Being able to smell nature is as important as being able to see it, so try to create a space that is pleasing to all the senses. Be sure to include greenery and bright colours, to enhance the appearance of the space and reflect nature. Children love to explore nature and touch and smell new plants, so make sure you only include child-friendly plants in your space.

Evening Entertainment

Although most adults are happy to sit outside in the evening and enjoy a glass of wine or beer, children can find this a little boring. As most play equipment is usually out of bounds at night, it’s a good idea to consider entertainment for the children. A projector can provide the perfect entertainment, all you need is a clear wall to project onto. Children love snuggling under blankets and watching movies outside and so do most adults.
