Going on an African safari with children can be an incredibly rewarding and unforgettable experience. It’s a chance to introduce kids to the wonders of nature and wildlife and to create memories that will last a lifetime. But before you embark on this adventure, it’s important to research and ensure you’re prepared. Here are some tips to help you plan a successful safari with kids:

Choose the right destination for your safari.

Not all African countries are created equal when it comes to family safaris. Some are better suited to families with young children, while others are better for older kids. Look for destinations with child-friendly accommodations and activities and a good safety record.

South Africa

The Kruger National Park is a popular destination for families. It has a variety of accommodation options and offers child-friendly game drives. Other attractions in the area include the Panorama Route and the Blyde River Canyon.

Tanzania

Serengeti National Park is a great place for families to go on a safari. It has a vast array of wildlife, including the famous wildebeest migration. There are also family-friendly lodges and camps in the area.

Kenya

Maasai Mara National Reserve is another popular destination for families. It has a high concentration of wildlife and offers child-friendly activities such as hot air balloon rides and cultural visits to Maasai villages.

Botswana

The Okavango Delta is a unique destination for families. It is a wetland area with various wildlife, including elephants and hippos. There are also family-friendly lodges and camps in the area.

Namibia

Etosha National Park is a great destination for families. It has a variety of wildlife and offers self-drive tours, which can be a fun experience for children.

Consider the timing.

The best time to go on a safari with kids is during the dry season, when wildlife is easier to spot, and the risk of malaria is lower. Avoid the rainy season, which can make travel difficult and increase the risk of disease.

Pack appropriately.

Make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen, insect repellent, and other essentials. Also, bring appropriate clothing for the climate, including long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect against the sun and insects.

Be flexible.

Remember that travelling with kids can be unpredictable, so be prepared to adjust your itinerary as needed. Allow plenty of rest and relaxation time, and don’t over-schedule activities.

Emphasise safety.

Make sure your kids understand the importance of staying safe around wild animals. Follow the rules and guidelines provided by your guide, and always keep a safe distance from wildlife.

With these tips in mind, you can plan a safari that your whole family will love. From spotting lions and elephants to watching the sunset over the savannah, an African safari is an adventure you’ll never forget.
