Realistic steps to a healthier you this year

January 14, 2018 by Jenni

We are now half way through January and I’m wondering how many people have already broken those New Years resolutions to go to the gym or on a run every morning before work. I don’t know why but we seem to think at the end of the year we should start off by putting pressure on ourselves, whether that is to do with hobbies, work, diet or exercise. So instead of putting unrealistic expectations on yourself, make smaller changes for a healthier lifestyle

Reduce screen time

Vision Direct says that reducing the amount of time spent using a screen will give your eyes a break and help you to avoid eye strain that leads to dry or uncomfortable feelings.

It will also help you sleep better, as using a screen late in the evening can mean it’s harder for your body to relax before drifting off. A longer sleep will help your eyes to rest and recuperate so you can start the next day feeling fresh.

Get an early night

According to The Sleep Council adults between 18-65 need 7-9 hours sleep and over 65s need 7-8 hours. I am totally lusting after Neom Organics Perfect Nights Sleep Scent to Sleep range. It has been specially formulated with natural fragrance to have a relaxing effect on the mind and body. It consists of 19 essential oils including lavender, sweet basil & jasmine, to help you relax and prepare for sleep.

Increase your exercise

I’m not talking about joining a gym or going on a running mission but if that’s what you want to do, go ahead. I’m thinking instead of using the lift, use the stairs. If you use a bus, get off a stop early and walk the rest of the way. The NHS have some fab 5 minute workout suggestions and a 10 minute workout too

Get into a routine

With the short Winter days it’s so hard to get any sense of routine as most of us leave for work in the dark and return home from work in the dark, and getting into a structured routine helps with the low energy.

Healthier swaps

Making some simple swaps with what you eat and drink can make a big difference to your health throughout the year. Even if you dont want to completely swap, you could alternate with your choices. If you are a big tea or coffee drinker. you could switch to decaff. Rather than having white bread all the time, you could switch to wholegrain. Swap full fat dairy to low fat, whether that is full fat milk to semi skimmed milk or full fat butter to a lower fat spread.

Focus on the positives

It is so easy to focus on everything that is going wrong but make sure you remember what is going right as well. Take a couple of minutes each night to think of something that made you happy that day, your mind needs looking after just as much as your body
