Moving to a new place, new house, or new country might be your dream, but there’s no denying that it can be stressful, tiresome, and demanding. The process can be long and take a toll on your mental and physical wellbeing if not done right.
Many people tend to underestimate the whole ordeal, and in the end, they are left crippling anxious. If you are one of the people who don’t perform well under stress, we advise you to get to work months before your actual moving date. Keep on checking the tasks off your to-do list so that you remain stress-free.
If you ask the moving experts, you will know that there is a method to all the madness. You cannot just pack up everything and haul it to another location. It is not as easy as it may sound. To keep the whole process seamless, avoid making the following mistakes, and you will be good to go!
BUDGETING
People seem to forget budgeting while moving, which is the number one mistake they make. Disruption in finances that too before moving to a new place can cause much stress. It is better to get a fair estimate of fuel, packing supplies, transportation, and miscellaneous expenditures beforehand.
You might also want to account for the expense of a storage unit, as moving into a new place sometimes requires remodelling or renovation. You can check out London storage options for this purpose.
Budgeting for the move will save you a lot of stress in the end because people seriously undermine how much it costs for a move. Get a price quote from removal companies once you have a clear estimate of how much you will spend on moving. Removal companies have years’ worth of experience under their belt. If they are getting the job done at the same price, Hire them!
DECLUTTERING
Moving to a new place means a fresh new start in life. Do you want to start your new life with the same old clutter you have lying around for years? Maybe it’s best to throw away those old curtains and shabby pillows.
Taking along useless stuff is just a rookie mistake which adds extra expense and takes up additional space. Trying to throw away, discard or donate things you think you no longer need. If you are thinking of off-loading everything into a storage unit, that is also a good idea.
Another mistake people make is that they fail to declutter before moving. Spending your time packing supplies on stuff that you will be throwing away afterwards is wasteful and adds to the stress. Take out some time to organize your wardrobe, pantry, and accessories and take along only the stuff that is useful and brings you joy.
SCHEDULING
Each one of us is guilty of procrastinating, but when it comes to moving, procrastinating can cause a lot of stress in the end. To avoid falling into the rabbit hole of procrastinating, set a schedule for every task.
Start preparing for the main event at least three months in advance. Set a timeline for decluttering and organizing your stuff. Set a timeline for packing up everything and pick a day for calling the transportation. Pick the stops you will make in advance. Plan everything and try to keep up with it for a pressure-free move.
CHEAP PACKING SUPPLIES
Skimping on packing supplies is a big No-No. We understand that you might be short on cash, but we can’t stress this enough. Cheap packing materials can be tricky to handle. They do not do well with heavy items and cannot stand the test of time. Boxes sometimes get tossed around during transportation, and if you don’t want your fragile stuff to get damaged, choose your packing material wisely.
Flimsy cardboard boxes, cheap void filling material are unable to hold and protect your belongings. It’s better to invest in good quality packing material, even if it means paying a couple of bucks extra. Your boxes might have to sit in a Brighton storage unit for some time. Buy good quality boxes so that they can hold up perfectly.
LABELING and INVENTORY
Another major stress-inducing factor that gets overlooked at the time is labelling the boxes. Picture yourself in your new house with tens of boxes and no labels on them. Unlabelled boxes will stress you out immediately and make you frantically open all the boxes while you search for your vacuum cleaner.
People often make the grave mistake of not making the inventory of all their boxes. Making inventory and labelling all your boxes will help you keep track of everything so that nothing gets stolen or lost during transit. It will also help you unpack in an organized manner.
Great list of tips and tricks! I am lucky when it comes to boxes as I can get a ton of them from where I work, but I agree the cheap kind suck.
This is all so true. However much you budget you’ll almost always go over this I find, and it’s so important to declutter and recycle/ pass on/ sell items you don’t want to move with x
Gosh! I have been moving home since I was a University student and doing it even after marriage, haha! I absolutely agree with all your points. I always label my boxes
Moving house can be very stressful indeed, these are great tips which people may forget to think about such as labelling, budgeting and decluttering
Decluttering is definitely something that you need to do for sure. I know that was something I had to do over the course of months just to make the move easier.
We haven’t moved in years but I do remember there being so much more to do than I planned.
Moving was to our first house was crazy and I was super stressed. These tips are amazing and would have really helped me back then.
When we moved, we labeled everything, and it really helped the transition between the two houses!
One of the biggest sources of moving stress is time. More specifically, not having enough of it. It’s important that you figure what you’ll need about two days to pack up. a studio or one bedroom apartment, three to four days for a two bedroom home, five to six days for a three bedroom home, and so on so that there will be no last minute cramming involved.
Moving can be so stressful and I am planning to move at some point next year and not looking forward to it! Thanks so much for sharing these tips on making it a little easter
