First things first, you need to know what your budget is. You need to sit down and think about how much money you have to spend on this road trip, and whether you’re going to be able to make that work. Choose Your Destinations
One of the most important things that you’re going to need to do is plan out your route and your destinations. We know that there are a lot of people out there who don’t like to do this; they like to go where the wind takes them, but you can’t do this when you have kids in the back of the car.
The reason you need to know where you’re going is to identify places to rest and stay, plan activities, and so much more. If you don’t know where you’re going, this becomes almost impossible, which can ruin the whole road trip.

Look At The Big Five
Before you set off on your road trip, you need to ensure that you are looking at the big five! What are the big five, you ask?
- Oil
- Coolant
- Brake fluid
- Windscreen wash
- Fuel
All of these need to be checked prior to setting off, as it’s imperative that you have enough of each item on the list. You can check the oil with the dipstick, top up your coolant little by little to ensure that it’s not overflowing, but also not on the last dregs either.
Your windscreen wash should be near the top of its container, and of course, you can see fuel using the fuel gauge. The last thing you want is to get a couple of hours away, only to find that something is low and you don’t have any with you in the car.
Always Check Your Tyres
As well as checking the big five, you also need to check your tyres before you set off. Make sure that you’re looking for anything stuck in them that could be causing you a slow puncture. Ensure that you’re checking they’re not flat by giving them a swift, quick kick. If they do feel a little low, you can fill them up before you set off.
If it does get to a point where you lose a tyre on the road, don’t stress too much because you can call a roadside mobile tyre fitting company to come and save the day. They will be able to get you sorted, but it would still be better for you if you didn’t have to call them in the first place.
Snack Management
When travelling with children, in vehicles, you will always need snacks on hand. This will prevent tantrums and meltdowns when children get hungry. On the first day of driving, you can make sandwiches to take along with you. However, for the rest of your trip, you may be reliant on fast food and restaurants.
Book Activities In Advance
There will always be something that you and the family want to do on your trip away. This could be something as simple as jumping in the local river to skydiving at 10,000 feet. Whatever it is you want to do, these may need to be booked in advance. Check that you don’t need to print out any tickets to take along with you; many companies accept e-tickets these days.
Communicate with your family and get ideas on what everyone wants to do. If you have three children, they might each want to do something, and they should all have a turn. Taking it in turns means everyone is happy and involved.
Consider Accommodation
Finally, when planning a family road trip, you need to consider where you will stay. These can get booked up pretty quickly, so you need to get booked in as soon as you know your dates. You don’t want to get there, and they have no room for you or your family.
There are many choices and decisions to make, from motels to RV parks if that is what you’re travelling in. Make sure your dates are accurate as you don’t wanna arrive too early or too late and miss your slot. If you are on a tight budget then motels are probably the best option for you. However, be sure to read reviews rather than just booking one on the off chance. You never know what goes on in those motel rooms.
