4 Must-Visit Places in Italy

March 16, 2026 by Jenni

Italy draws you in through everyday moments as much as famous landmarks. You notice it when you step into a café for a quick espresso or follow a narrow street that suddenly reveals a centuries-old church. Travelling here works best when you allow time to experience the places themselves rather than rushing between attractions. A well-planned route helps you enjoy the culture and local food without feeling overwhelmed. Several destinations capture this balance particularly well and offer a clear introduction to what makes Italy so memorable.

Rome

Ancient ruins stand beside apartment blocks, and local life unfolds around sites you may recognise from textbooks. Walking through the city helps you connect these layers of history in a way that feels natural. Start your morning at the Colosseum and arrive before the tour guides for more space to move around comfortably and read the displays. From there, continue through the Roman Forum and towards the Pantheon on foot. This route works well because the major sites sit close together, so you spend less time navigating transport.

Venice

Enjoy the slow pace as boats carry people to work and quiet alleys lead to small squares where residents gather. This environment encourages you to explore gradually. Take a vaporetto along the Grand Canal instead of paying for a gondola. Public boats travel the same waterway and cost far less, yet they still provide clear views of the historic palaces along the canal. After passing St Mark’s Square, walk into quieter districts such as Cannaregio, where family-run restaurants serve simple seafood dishes.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast combines cliffs with colourful towns overlooking the Mediterranean. Travelling between them reveals wide coastal views that make the journey itself part of the experience. Join organised Amalfi Coast tours that stop in Positano and Ravello. These guided trips remove the difficulty of driving narrow roads while giving you time to explore each town on foot. In Positano, stepped streets lead down to the beach, while Ravello’s gardens provide elevated viewpoints across the coastline.

Florence

Florence offers a compact historic centre where art and architecture shape the city’s identity. Museums and markets sit within walking distance, which makes exploring straightforward. Climb the Duomo early in the day. The view from the top helps you understand the city’s layout and its terracotta rooftops. Afterwards, walk across Ponte Vecchio into the Oltrarno district, where small workshops still produce leather goods and handcrafted jewellery.

So Much More of Italy Awaits You

Italy becomes far more memorable when you travel at the pace each place encourages. Rome rewards long walks between historic landmarks, while the Amalfi Coast encourages you to pause and enjoy the scenery rather than rush between towns. When you allow time for these moments, the trip feels less like a checklist and more like a genuine experience. Leave space in your plans for small discoveries, because those often become the moments you remember most.
