Fun family activities

August 7, 2021 by Jenni

Spending time with your family is very important, and this can become increasingly difficult as your children get older. Teens find that friends and school activities become more fun and appealing than spending time with family. So, how can you spice up the family activities and make them fun for everyone, small children, adults, and teenagers alike?

Get input from everyone

If they suggest it, they are more likely to enjoy it.

Go places that offer something for all

Try multi-purpose activity centres etc., that offer games for small children and teenagers as well.

Make family activities a priority

The more often you have fun family activities, the easier it is to form better relationships with each other, and once you have better relationships, the more you want to spend time with the family.

Find a balance

If you have occasional family activities, your children will be more willing to participate than if you have them every day. You can make them mandatory, but find a nice balance between family activities and activities with friends.

The following are some great fun family activities that are appropriate for kids, teens, and parents too.

Go play mini-golf

This is a great family activity, as you have some downtime to talk, ask about the children’s week, and it can take a long time or go quickly, depending on how you play. You can also make it more fun by adding some competition; winner picks where you go for a treat after or something like that. Another benefit is many of the places that offer miniature golf also have other activities the whole family can enjoy, such as arcades, batting cages, bumper cars, etc.

Go swimming

This is a great family activity; not only is it active, so you get in some exercise, but everyone from infant to Grandma can enjoy the fun. For those who do not like the water, there is always lounging in a sun chair and reading a magazine or laying out to get a tan. You can get the whole family involved in games like ball games, sharks and minnows, or even just diving for rings.

Go to sporting events/concerts/plays of family members

This is a good way to have fun and also support your family at the same time. If it is a play or a pageant, you could go as a family beforehand and get flowers to congratulate their performance. If it is a sporting event, you could go and get snacks etc.

Go to professional sporting events

This can be a really fun activity to do as a family. You can get snacks, make signs, or dress up as your favourite players.

Go to the park

Going to the park can be a very fun family activity. You can pack a picnic, play Frisbee, swing, get a family game of football, or skip rocks in a pond.

Go out to eat

This is another fun family activity, and it is appropriate for all ages because everyone will find something they want to eat on the menu. You could even make it a weekly activity and rotate who gets to pick the restaurant. If money doesn’t stretch to a restaurant, you could do weekly picnics and everyone can take a turn choosing a picnic location.

Go to a movie

While it may be difficult to find a movie everyone in the family wants to see, this can be a fun family activity. You can even make it into a whole evening by doing movie trivia beforehand or afterwards.

If none of these activities seems like something your family would enjoy, get your family together and discuss with them what they think a fun family activity would be, then be sure to do one at least once a month.

I love all of these recommendations. If not for the pandemic, I would have taken my kids out regularly.

Some lovely ideas here for family days out. I agree that having these days less frequently will make them all the more special. I love eating out with friends and family.

One of our favourite activities is taking the dog to the park – it is so simply but something we can all do together.

I find that with two teens and a 9 year old it can be difficult for everyone to want to go out together. Bowling is a winner and recently we went on canal boat in London which the children all loved.

We do go walking, to parks and swimming a lot as well as loving days out at farms. We also really enjoy bowling.

Our family has always prioritized having fun together. These days we confine it to just us (pandemic).
