Tamanu oil is obtained from the nut kernels of the evergreen Tamanu tree (Calophyllum inophyllum). This tropical tree grows up to 30 meters in height. All parts of the Tamanu tree have medicinal value. This tree was considered sacred by ancient Polynesians. Tamanu oil has a mild and pleasant aroma. It is dark green in colour. This thick oil is widely used in many parts of the world.

Here is a brief overview of some health benefits of Tamanu oil.

Tamanu oil accelerates the wound healing process and promotes healthy skin. It promotes the formation of new skin tissues. This topical healing agent is used to treat burns, eczema, acne, cuts, scrapes, anal fissures, scaly skin, chapped skin, post-surgical wounds, cracked skin, skin allergies, insect bites, acne scars, cracked heels, sunburns, abrasions, psoriasis, diabetic sores, dry skin, shingles, skin ulcers, bedsores, blisters and herpes sores.

Tamanu oil contains coumarins, which are found to inhibit tumour formation. This healing oil contains xanthones, which are well-known for their anti-bacterial properties. Xanthones and coumarins protect the skin cells from damage caused by free radicals. Tamanu oil is well-known for its antimicrobial properties. This oil is found to be effective against foot odour and body odour.

Tamanu oil contains neoflavonoids. These polyphenolic compounds have many health benefits and promote a sense of well-being. Flavonoid glycosides in Tamanu oil reduce capillary fragility, prevent cancer and strengthen the immune system. Tamanu oil prevents diaper rash and skin eruptions. It is found to fade stretch marks.

Tamanu oil possesses analgesic properties. It is used to treat neuralgia (pain caused due to nerve damage). It provides relief from pain in the joints. This healing oil is used as an analgesic for sciatica. Tamanu oil is used in many anti-ageing preparations. This oil is well-known for its insect repellent properties.

Triterpenes in Tamanu oil are known for their anticancer activity. They also possess anti-inflammatory properties. Tamanu oil is known to be effective against sore throat (should be applied topically). It is used to treat leprous nephritis. Ancient Chinese used Tamanu oil to treat eye problems and inflammation.

Tamanu oil is a gift of nature and has many health benefits. However, pregnant women and breastfeeding woman should not use this oil. If you observe any unusual symptoms after using this oil, you need to consult a certified physician without delay.

Have you used Tamanu oil?

Tropic skincare Tamanu balm

I haven’t but I do use Tamanu balm from Tropic Skincare. This multipurpose green balm helps to repair scarred and damaged skin and boasts a unique herbal scent. Its ability to soothe dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, as well as stings and bug bites, makes it a real on-the-go skincare hero. Tamanu oil promotes the formation of new tissue and accelerates skin healing. Also antibacterial and ultra-nourishing. Blackcurrant extract works in harmony with raspberry seed oil to deliver antioxidant benefits to the skin. Blended with cupuaçu and cocoa butter to thoroughly hydrate and soothe skin for a smoother, more supple result.
