What Are The Most Likely Road Trip Issues That Families Will Face This Summer?

April 28, 2026 by Jenni

Who doesn’t like a road trip? This sounds like the perfect adventure, combining freedom, flexibility, and the chance to explore at your own pace. Road trips are a fantastic opportunity to make more memories as a family.

But they do need careful planning if you don’t want to face some of the most common issues that spoil the dream. Are you ready for a road trip with the family this summer? Make sure you get these things right from the start.

Accommodation

Granted, road trips are supposed to be spontaneous. In reality, you can’t afford to be spontaneous during the summer holiday. No matter how exciting it can be to take the road without a plan, you do actually need a plan. Spontaneity doesn’t work in your favour when you are travelling during the peak holiday season with children. Ultimately, school breaks and summer holidays mean that popular destinations are likely to fill up quickly, leaving limited to no options for last-minute bookings.

So, you need to pre-book your accommodation early. While unique rentals tend to go first, even more common ones will be gone if you don’t book this summer.

Driving Until Late at Night

Packing too much into your itinerary is a common mistake. There is so much you want to see and do! However, you want ot be careful. A packed schedule means that you’ll end up driving late into the night after a day full of activities. In other words, long stretches behind the wheel can feel exhausting at any given time, but when you’ve been active all day, they are even worse.
Did you know that according to personal injury solicitors, accidents during busy holiday periods are frequently linked to tiredness and reduced concentration? After a packed day, your reactions are more likely to be slower behind the wheel, and this is exactly when accidents can happen.

Unexpected Car Problems

Nothing disrupts a road trip faster than car trouble. Whether it’s overheating or running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere, these are the kind of issues that can put a sudden end to the trip.

The problem is that you can’t completely avoid car issues. Sometimes, they arrive when you least expect them. But you can take preventive measures to control them as much as you can. You want to carry out a full vehicle check before taking the road.

This will include checking tyres, oil levels, brakes, and coolant. Also, you should plan the route to include regular service stations, which ensures you can refuel and take necessary breaks when needed.

Travelling Abroad

If you are planning to take a road trip abroad, it’s worth checking with your car insurance for temporary cover while driving abroad.

Another thing you may want to check if your visa. If you are travelling from the UK to the EU this summer, you will need to research if you need to get your ETIAS, which is the visa-like authorisation for UK travellers to enter the EU.

In conclusion, you want to plan your road trip with the family carefully this summer. This can be a fun time together as long as you stay organised to avoid any chaotic situations!
