You’re cleaning up the crumbs from the back of the car as you have heard (again) how much longer until we arrive. A half-empty juice box has rolled underneath your feet. Today hasn’t been bad; today has simply turned into a very realistic and hurried type of day.
Many Family trips experience similar scenarios. These aren’t all made up of only photo ops, great planning, and smooth travelling experiences. They are made up of brief moments, hungry times, snacking times, and the meals that provide everyone an opportunity to pause.
Food Creates The Structure Of Your Day
When you travel with your family, the structure of your day is shaped by food. A good breakfast allows you to depart your hotel without hearing many complaints. A picnic provides tired children with room to move. The evening meal signals that the most hectic portion of the day has come to an end.
There doesn’t need to be anything special about each and every meal. The pressure of trying to create a “special” dining experience can cause unnecessary stress. Some families enjoy the simplicity of stopping at a local bakery, eating sandwiches at a park bench, sharing chips after a long hike, etc… As mentioned earlier, the key isn’t necessarily about having an elaborate meal experience. What’s important is the emotions surrounding it.
Local Eats Help Create Memories
When you sample foods unique to a location, that area becomes so much easier to recall. Whether this is fresh seafood in a coastal town, handcrafted ice cream in a quaint village, or a home-cooked meal by a family-owned restaurant that you stumbled upon, these flavours help create memories of your destination.
It may be helpful before you leave to save some casual dining establishments on your cell phone. If everyone is craving something they know and love, then you could find an Italian restaurant close by. Pizza, pasta, and fresh-baked bread can be quite effective in improving everyone’s mood. Italian restaurant menus always have something for everyone.
When choosing a dining establishment, consider whether they are kid-friendly. Do the children have enough room to sit? Are the portions flexible? Will no one feel rushed?
Healthy Snacks Save The Mood
A cranky, hungry child can turn the entire tone of a trip upside-down. Even if adults don’t admit it, a grumpy, hungry adult can do the same thing.
Keep some healthy snack options readily available. Crackers, fruit, nuts, sandwiches, and bottled water can help keep hunger pains at bay during layovers. Healthy snacks are also beneficial when delays, such as heavy traffic, lines at attractions, and checking into accommodations past their scheduled arrival time, add additional hours to your day.
Some short breaks for snacks can also provide an opportunity to break the tension on an unpleasant afternoon.
Everyone Gets A Little Input
Family vacations are more enjoyable when everyone gets input on meals instead of one person controlling everything. Allow each family member to pick something small at least once. For example, one child picks out the flavour of ice cream. Another selects what he/she would like to have for breakfast. Choose the most relaxing place to dine together.
Allowing each individual to make small decisions, such as picking the ice cream or selecting breakfast, will allow them to feel included.
