Whether you live in Bristol or are having a UK staycation, there is plenty to do. Bristol Events include everything from creative festivals to jaw-dropping circus performances, magical theatre productions, live music concerts, and inspiring art exhibitions.

Bristol Festivals

Step right up and prepare to be entranced by the incredible world of Bristol’s Festivals. These vibrant events are the perfect opportunity for families to come together and embrace their imaginations through engaging activities and performances. With a lineup that will delight children of all ages, this festival promises to be a highlight of the Bristol entertainment scene.

Bristol Light Festival

In February, there is the Bristol Light Festival. It is a 10-day light trail illuminating various locations throughout Bristol city centre. It showcases a collection of local, national and internationally renowned light artists and features 11 light installations. The dates for 2024 are Friday, 2 – Sunday, 11 February.

Lyra Festival

Lyra unites poets and speakers from Bristol, the UK, and worldwide to showcase the city as a hub for outstanding poetry. They also invite talented artists from Bristol and other parts of the UK and the international community.

Their objective is to present poetry in diverse formats, such as readings, slam contests, exhibitions of poetry films, guided poetic tours, digital media presentations, panel discussions, open mic events, lectures, and others. The dates for 2024 are April 12th – 21st.

Bristol Walking Festival

During May, designated as National Walking Month, you can participate in numerous in-person events and activities related to walking. A wide range of options are available to suit everyone’s interests, including nature trails, scenic hikes, historical tours, walking sports, family-friendly strolls, and cultural walks.

Weekends of Wonder!

Weekends of Wonder! is an incredible street theatre festival guaranteed to amaze people of all ages. It brings together local and international artists who will perform mesmerising performances to light up the town. The festival will showcase experienced street performers and up-and-coming talent, creating a magical atmosphere on the city’s main street. You can expect to see vibrant circus and theatre acts, similar to those seen in Covent Garden, and interactive performances that you can participate in. Dates will be released for 2024, but 2023 weekends were in May and June.

Festival of Nature

It is the biggest free nature festival in the UK. You can anticipate various activities such as workshops, talks, walks, and a combination of digital, hybrid, and in-person events throughout the city. It will be held between 1st and 9th June 2024.

Upfest

Europe’s biggest street art and graffiti festival, Upfest, is a highly anticipated event in Bristol that draws over 50,000 visitors over the weekend. However, the festival could not take place in 2023 due to increased expenses. Nevertheless, preparations are underway to ensure the festival will happen in 2024.

St. Pauls Carnival

St Pauls Carnival is a lively and visually stunning event that celebrates diversity and the rich heritage of Afro-Caribbean culture. The festivities include a parade, music systems, colourful costumes, delicious food, talented musicians, energetic dancers, and much more. Again, like Upfest, the carnival has to scale back due to increasing costs, but it is expected to be on in June or July 2024.

Bristol Harbour Festival

You should consider attending the Bristol Harbour Festival if you’re looking for a free, family-friendly event filled with live music, dance, and various art forms. This festival has much to offer, including live music shows, comedy performances, aerial displays, circus acts, vibrant markets, and exciting maritime activities. It is widely regarded as one of Bristol’s top summer festivals. It usually takes place in July.

Bristol Balloon Fiesta

Over 100 hot air balloons participate in the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, which 500,000 spectators attend during the four-day event. There are also fairground rides, live music, and child-friendly activities.

Bristol considers the Fiesta to be just as iconic as figures like Brunel, Wallace and Gromit, or Concorde. A committee organizes this event and operates as a charity, upholding its original founding principle of being completely free for the public to enjoy.

The Bristol Sea Shanty Festival

The Bristol Sea Shanty Festival is an event honouring the city by showcasing songs related to the sea.

The maritime music festival is held in various locations in Bristol Harbourside. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to talented singers performing sea-inspired songs at venues such as Brunel’s SS Great Britain dockyard, Underfall Yard cafe, the main stage in Brunel Square, The Matthew, Brunel’s Buttery, and the Arnolfini Harbour stage. It usually takes place in September.

Bristol Photography Festival

The festival will feature displays of work by well-known photographers from around the world, as well as projects created in collaboration with local communities in the city and surrounding area. To enrich the experience, there will also be a series of workshops and educational events open to schools, universities, and community groups, all aimed at highlighting the importance and impact of modern-day photography.

Over 200,000 people attended the inaugural festival in 2021-2022, where 14 exhibitions were showcased in prominent locations throughout the city. They are preparing for the upcoming second edition of the celebration, scheduled for October 2024.
