Thinning Hair? Here’s What to Do

March 10, 2026 by Jenni

For many of us, our hair is our crowning glory, and even if it is not our best feature, we still want it to look good, right? So, it can be really upsetting when your hair starts to thin, especially when it happens gradually, and you don’t notice it until the thinning is well underway.

The thing is, many women notice changes in their hair density over time, whether due to hormonal shifts, stress, ageing, or lifestyle factors, so it is worth knowing what you can do about it if and when it does happen…

Start with your overall health

If your hair is thinning, it is always a good idea to look at your overall health before you do anything else because your body, if it is stressed out or not getting all the nutrients it needs, can have a huge impact on hair health, slowing growth and increasing shedding.

Common nutritional factors linked to hair thinning include low iron levels, vitamin D deficiency, and insufficient protein intake. Women are particularly prone to iron deficiency, which can contribute to excessive shedding. If hair thinning appears suddenly or seems severe, it may be worth speaking to a GP and asking about blood tests to rule out deficiencies.

A balanced diet rich in leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and protein sources can support healthy hair growth over time.

Look at your hair care routine

If your diet is fine and you’re happy and healthy, it could be that your hair is getting thinner because of your styling habits, and that is something you can easily change. Things like tight ponytails, braids, and bunds can put too much tension on your hair follicles, and over time, this can cause breakage or alopecia, for example.

Heat styling can also weaken the hair shaft. If you regularly use straighteners or curling tools, it is a good idea to try lowering the temperature and using a heat protectant to see if things improve.

Manage stress and hormones

Stress can do a number on your hair, and it is a much more common cause of thinning than you might think.  A condition called telogen effluvium can occur after periods of emotional stress and anxiety, illness, or major life changes. In this situation, hair follicles enter the resting phase of the growth cycle earlier than normal, which leads to increased shedding a few months later.

Hormonal changes can also be a common cause, with things like pregnancy, menopause, and certain medical conditions all contributing to lower hair density at certain points. Managing stress through sleep, exercise, and relaxation techniques may help support overall hair health.

Explore professional treatments

If thinning hair becomes persistent or more noticeable, professional advice can be helpful. Dermatologists and hair specialists can evaluate the underlying cause and recommend treatment options.

Some women benefit from topical treatments that stimulate hair growth, while others may explore more advanced medical solutions if hair loss is significant. For example, surgical procedures such as fut surgery involve transplanting healthy hair follicles to thinning areas of the scalp, helping restore natural-looking density in suitable candidates.

While this type of treatment is typically considered for more advanced hair loss, it highlights how modern hair restoration techniques have become increasingly sophisticated.

Thinning hair? Don’t panic and try the above ideas instead!
