The Essential Guide to Camping Near London

November 5, 2020 by Jenni

Don’t let the thought of camping in the cold put you off, there is so much fun to be had, huddled together by the fire and playing games as a family.

London may be a big, bustling city, but there are still plenty of places you can go nearby to pitch a tent and commune with nature. Bring your sleeping bag, hiking boots, and sense of adventure, and enjoy time in the great outdoors.

Pack your camping gear, make your reservations, gather your family or friends and head out into the great unknown. Well, maybe not the great unknown, but a fabulous adventure within the vastness of London’s green spaces.

While you are out exploring, you may want to stow your valuables at a London luggage storage spot. Costly belongings and personal effects are best left somewhere safe. Find luggage storage in London and say goodbye to dreadful walks with heavy luggage! Grab your camera, though, to snap some fantastic photos while camping.

Take a few minutes to find the right campground for you, whether you are pitching your tent or pulling your caravan or RV for a weekend of fun.  To get you started, here is a list of eight campgrounds in or near London.

Broadhembury Caravan and Camping Park

Located in Kent near Ashford, this campground is a great family destination. Open year-round, campers can enjoy a game room, play area, campers’ kitchen, and herb garden.

Stroll through the peaceful park, sit and watch breathtaking sunsets, and watch small animals frolic in the clearing. Bring your motorhome or your tent, or enjoy one of their glamping cabins. Check for availability and reserve your spot for a weekend of fun.

Abbey Wood Caravan Club Campsite

Just minutes from Greenwich, the Abbey Wood Caravan Club Campsite is convenient to central London but far enough away that you can truly enjoy nature. Hop on a boat and sail down the River Thames or hit the hiking trails.

Spend time in the adorable village of Greenwich while camping, or spend time relaxing at the campsite playing games and getting to know your fellow campers. Bring your caravan, pitch a tent, or glamp it up in one of the cosy cabins.

Open year-round, you will want to reserve your spot early so you have your ideal campsite.

Still Acres Touring and Camping Park

The fact that it’s family operated and very clean makes the Still Acres Touring and Camping Park a great choice. Located in Kent, this adult-only campsite offers several great amenities including clean showers, a game room, and a kitchen for campers.

If glamping is your thing, this campsite can accommodate you by providing a clean, cosy cabin with hot water and plush beds. RVs and tents are also welcome. You can even book online to ensure you have a campsite waiting for you when you arrive.

Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park

Located in the Edmonton neighbourhood of London, the Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park is inside River Lee Country Park and is only half an hour from the business centre of the city.

Bring your tent or pull your caravan into one of the spacious campsites. If you prefer more of a glamping experience, rent one of the wooden pods or cabins available. With over 1,000 acres of green space, you can spend days hiking, cycling, or bird watching.

River Lee Country Park is also a great spot for white water rafting. Bring your friends for a weekend of outdoor excitement. Check pricing and availability online.

Fontmills Farm Campsite

Pack up and head to East Sussex for a weekend of camping excitement. Located only a few miles from South Downs, the Fontmills Farm Campsite is ideal for those looking to get out and stretch their legs on hiking trails or enjoy a bit of cycling.

After spending the day on the trails, grab a quick shower and head into East Sussex for a great evening at the pubs. Come back to the campsite for a relaxing night under the stars. Book online and have a blast camping at Fontmills Farm Campsite. It’s also perfect for glamping in Sussex, if you fancy something a bit more upmarket than your own tent.

Walton on Thames Camping and Caravanning Club Site

Only about 45 minutes from central London, this campsite is tranquil and a great place to come for relaxation. Activities near the campsite include golf, horseback riding, llama trekking, hiking, and cycling.

Visit during the summer months and head over to the nearby farm and orchard for vegetable and fruit picking. Bring your sense of adventure, your tent, or your motorhome for a week or weekend of fun. Book your spot online today.

Little Ropers Woodland Camping

While somewhat more primitive than other campsites, Little Ropers Woodland Camping offers amazing campsites on an actual working farm. Llamas and cattle are raised on the farm and you can enjoy being lulled to sleep by the mooing of the cattle.

Located in Suffolk in the Stour Valley, campers do have access to a flush toilet and wash area, but there is no electricity. You will truly be roughing it when you camp at Little Ropers Woodland Camping. Check out rates and reservation policies.

Crystal Palace Caravan Club Campsite

Spend a few days unwinding at the Crystal Palace Caravan Club Campsite. Walk from your campsite to the Crystal Palace and then hike through the woods, along well-marked trails or head into London for a day of sightseeing.

Clean facilities and friendly staff make your getaway a little more pleasurable. Electricity, flush toilets, hot showers, and campers’ kitchen are just a few of the amenities that await you. Book your spot and enjoy a weekend getaway.

Cosy Camping Suffolk

Located in Suffolk, just outside the quaint village of Lavenham, this campsite offers tent camping and pod camping, a quirky twist on glamping. Rent one of the adorable wooden camping pods and relax in comfort.

Pods come with a private shower and toilet, whereas tent campsites have shared facilities. Hang out in the lounge, check out what activities are offered that day, or head out on your own to explore. Learn more about the camping pods and book your stay.

Theobalds Park Camping and Caravanning Club Campsite

Head north out of London to Theobalds Park and pull your RV into a shaded campsite or set up your tent on a grassy knoll. Located just minutes from Epping Forest and Lee Valley Country Park, this campsite is the perfect place where you can explore the area.

Spend time hiking, cycling, sitting along the river, watching sunsets, bird watching, or exploring London. Relax next to a campfire and listen to nature and then fall asleep under the stars. Find more information and book your campsite soon.

One final note: don’t forget your essentials. Your caravan or motorhome will need to be in tip-top condition before your trip, so get a service done if you haven’t had one recently. Also, make sure your insurance is up-to-date – motorhome insurance in particular can vary considerably from other types, so now would be a good time to review your policy. Have fun!
