Home Design Trends: Wooden Front Doors

April 27, 2023 by Jenni

The front of your house is arguably what creates its first impression; it is the first thing that all visitors to your home will notice. In that respect, it makes sense that you would want to ensure that the front of your house is as nicely decorated as the inside is. Obviously, there are fewer opportunities to make your mark on the exterior of your home, but one of the ways that you can choose to do this is by choosing a nicer front door. A lot of homes have a PVC front door as standard, but wooden front doors are a growing trend. Let’s explore.

What Wood?

There are a few options when it comes to choosing the wood for your front door. Although the two most popular are Oak and Accoya, these aren’t the only choices, but they do make the most sense. If neither of them speaks to you, then you could always assess your other options. Oak is a hardwood, and Accoya is a softwood. Oak has a long history of being used in construction because it is strong, sustainable and offers a nice finish. Accoya, on the other hand, is an engineered option which is durable, eco-friendly, insect-repellant and UV resistant.

How Much Does a Wooden Front Door Cost?

In terms of home improvement projects, there are several factors which will affect how much you can expect to pay. The cost of the front door itself can vary depending on the material, the design, the glass or glazed areas and whether it has enhanced security features. The installation cost might be included in the price or an additional fee. The business you choose will also affect the price; search on MyBuilder to find the relevant local tradespeople and get a few quotes.

Maintenance & Longevity

There is very little maintenance required for a front door. In fact, PVC front doors require almost no maintenance apart from occasional cleaning to ensure they still look good. Wooden doors will need repainting every few years to keep them looking fresh, but apart from this, they also don’t need much else. Wooden doors can last for over a hundred years when installed well and are of good quality. Think about how many wooden doors have lasted from bygone eras that you can see when taking a tour of old churches and castles. PVC doors tend to last a maximum of thirty years, but they could be as little as ten.

The Colour

You can choose a natural finish and lean into the tone of the wood; you could stain it to enhance the grain. Or, you could choose to paint the door a new colour entirely. Think about the colours used within your home and your personal tastes too. Many people like to opt for a bright front door in jewel tones to make it stand out. This means emeralds, royal blues, deep reds and yellows. Although pastels and muted tones are popular too among those that prefer subtlety.

To Conclude

Wooden front doors are a huge trend this year, and they have a lot to recommend them. They can outlast a lot of other forms, and offer a better finish and tend to be more aesthetically pleasing than white PVC. The cost is something that you will need to consider. However, the price does fluctuate, and you should be able to find a more budget-friendly option.
