With sustainability being on our minds more these days, we all need to look at what we are purchasing when shopping for women’s clothing and ensure that what we do buy, will be worn over and over again, not the once, before disappearing to the back of the wardrobe.
According to Clothes Aid, 350,000 tonnes, that’s around £140 million worth of used but still, wearable clothing goes to landfills in the UK every year.
This equates to more than 30% of our unwanted clothing currently going to landfill.
We Great Britons send 700,000 tonnes of clothing to recycling centres, textile banks, clothes collections and to charity each year. That’s enough to fill 459 Olympic-size swimming pools.
Eco Age founder Livia Firth began the #30Wears campaign to encourage us to only buy an item if we really know that we’ll wear it. If we are not going to wear it at least 30 times, we shouldn’t be buying it.
As well as looking at how many times we will be wearing a piece, we can also think about where we purchase from. Consider looking in vintage and charity shops. Have a rummage through the rails and see what treasures you can find.
For timeless pieces. stick to classic shapes, styles and colours. Bright prints, crop tops and rose gold coloured everything are great for a modern wardrobe. If you want to stay timeless and ensure they go with a variety of outfits, I would stick with neutral colours such as black, navy, grey or camel. They can be paired with smart trousers and a glitzy top, thrown over a white t-shirt and jeans or over a dress.
Heels
Strapless high heels, court shoes or pumps as they are sometimes referred to are another classic.
