Should children have a TV in the bedroom?

When is it Okay for Children to Have a TV in Their Room?

It’s a topic of debate for many parents – when should children have a TV in their room? There are pros and cons to this decision, and ultimately it’s up to each family to decide what works best for them. In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the key considerations for parents making this decision.

Amount of Screen Time You Want Your Children to Have

There are a few things that parents should keep in mind when considering whether or not to allow their children to have a TV in their bedroom.

It’s important to think about how much screen time your child is already getting during the day. If they’re already spending several hours in front of screens (e.g., at school, doing homework, playing video games), then adding another hour or two in front of the TV may not be the best idea.

Consider your child’s age and maturity level. A younger child who is still learning to follow rules and/or Is prone to tantrums might not be ready for the responsibility of having a TV in their room. Conversely, an older child who is more independent and responsible might be better equipped to handle having a TV in their bedroom. You will also want to think about cost, whether you want a small TV, second-hand TV or splurge on a new 4k ultra hd tv.

Values and Beliefs Around Media Consumption

Another thing to think about is your family’s values and beliefs around media consumption. Some families choose to limit screen time as much as possible, while others are more relaxed about it.

There’s no right or wrong answer here – again, it ultimately comes down to what works best for your family. If you do decide to allow your child to have a TV in their room, there are a few ground rules you might want to put in place.

For example, you could set a rule that the TV must be turned off during homework time or bedtime. Or, you could limit the types of shows that can be watched on the bedroom TV (e.g., no violent or adult content).

As with most parenting decisions, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to whether or not children should have a TV in their room. It’s important to consider your child’s age, maturity level, and screen time habits before making a decision. And if you do decide to allow your child to have a TV in their room, be sure to set some ground rules around its use.

What’s my stance on a TV in the bedroom?

In my family, we have no intention of putting a TV in our children’s bedrooms. However, we have bought one for the spare room which we are calling the games room so there will be an Xbox and TV in there as well as board games, toys etc. I think D would get TVs for the bedroom but I would prefer not to, we have one in the living room and one in the games room so there is an opportunity to watch as a family or to have some space if one of us wants it. We don’t have a TV in our bedroom either.

What are the statistics of children having a TV in the bedroom?

Linda Pagani, a professor at the University of Montreal’s School of Psycho-Education, conducted a study in 2019 on the effects a television in the bedroom may have on children.

Her research found that children who have a TV in their bedroom at age four “predicted a higher body mass index at age 12, more unhealthy eating habits at age 13, higher levels of emotional distress, depressive symptoms, victimisation, physical aggression, and lowers levels of sociability at age 12, above and beyond pre-existing individual and family factors.”
