Off The Grid: Ways to Entertain the Whole Family Without Power

Sometimes we choose to go ‘off the grid’ and do without electricity for a short or longer time. Sometimes we don’t choose this at all and must manage when there’s a power cut. In either case, there is no need to be bored. As much as we might rely on our devices and electricity to keep us going, you can do plenty of things alone and as a family to keep yourselves entertained.

Have A Games Night

Board games are an ideal way to have fun during a power outage, and if you don’t have any in the house, it’s time to invest in a few. Make sure you have games that every age group can play so that no one gets stuck or feels left out. You can even have a regular family game night when you have power rather than watching TV.

Camp In The Garden

What better thing to do than something you don’t need electricity for? Get your sleeping bags, tents, and flashlights ready! Go outside to camp in your garden. Use a barbecue? Have dinner out in the open air under the stars.

Explore Nature

Take some time to go outside if it’s daytime and the weather is safe. Explore your neighbourhood by going on a hike, riding a bike, doing a treasure hunt in your garden, or take a drive.

Learn Something

Now is a great time to spend quality time with your children and teach them useful and enjoyable knowledge or abilities. Tricks like making a bubble, shuffling cards, and skipping rocks are great ways to start.

Build A Den

This is a great one for parents. Build a den with your bed sheets, pillows, and anything else you can find. It will take your child’s mind off the dark and give you something to do.

Talk

Talk about your hobbies, favourite memories, and what each person in your home values most. Use the downtime to catch up with people.

Take A Nap

Your mind needs some time off, so why not use this extra downtime to rest and enjoy a nap? Of course, this will depend on who you have to look after and if they also want to go to sleep, but it could be a possibility.

Read

Read an actual book. You can do this with the help of candles or a torch. And, despite what most people think, you won’t hurt your eyes permanently.

Do A Workout

Although you might be used to relying on equipment or video tutorials when working out, it can be done without anything other than you. Move around, get your heart rate up, and enjoy getting a little fitter.

Treat Yourself

If the ice cream is going to melt anyway, you might as well make a huge “kitchen sink” sundae. Track down a sizable bowl, fill it with ice cream and add any desired toppings, such as cereal and sprinkles. Then get a big spoon and dig in!
