When planning a holiday in the UK for older adults, it’s essential to consider several factors. First, it would help if you made sure the accommodations you’re choosing provide convenient amenities and services for the older adults to keep them safe, comfortable, and protected while travelling. Second, if you plan, you can make sure any older adults you’re travelling with will have an incredible time travelling and discovering the beautiful places in the UK.
Look for Accessible Accommodations
When choosing a place to stay in the UK for older adults, accessibility is important. Find out if the places you’re interested in booking have options for disabled people or those with mobility issues, such as escalators, elevators, or even stairlifts. Some ageing adults can’t walk up multiple staircases without experiencing excruciating pain. You don’t want to put your ageing loved one through that trouble. The good news is that most hotels have numerous elevators available for guests to use so that they won’t have to take the stairs to get to their rooms.
Find Out What the Bathroom Looks Like
The bathroom may not seem too important, but you don’t want your ageing relative to slip, fall, and end up with severe injuries due to a lack of safety precautions taken. Find out if the bathroom has a walk-in bathtub or shower that would make it that much easier for your ageing loved one to get in and out with ease.
It also helps if there are mobility bars installed along the walls of the bathroom. These bars allow elderly guests and those with disabilities to hold onto something while walking around in the bathroom. Age UK Mobility offers and installs these essential products designed to improve mobility for ageing individuals in the UK.
Search for Fun Yet Accessible Things to Do
While looking for things to do in the UK with older adults, be sure to look for accessible activities. For example, you’re probably not expecting to go on a zipline in the UK when travelling with older adults who struggle with mobility, however, there are plenty of activities like these that you can do if you research where you are staying. I have previously been to Calvert Trust in the Lake District. Here you could go climbing, canoeing, zip-lining, horse riding etc, even if you use a wheelchair.
However, you may want to visit different places and go on various tours to learn new things about the areas that you’re checking out for the first time. When looking for other tours to attend, find out if they’re accessible to determine if these tours are a good fit for the older adults in your life.
Planning a Holiday in the UK for Older Adults
When planning a holiday in the UK for older adults, you must consider a few things, including the accommodations and types of activities to participate in during your stay. First, focus on finding the perfect accommodations that offer safety features for older adults struggling with mobility.
Once you’ve found the ideal place to stay, it’s an excellent time to check out the different types of tours and activities you can participate in without putting a strain on the older adults in your life. It’s possible to enjoy your time, explore, and make memories without putting anyone at risk of sustaining injuries on the holiday.

These are all good tips. The bathroom definitely matters, my mom couldn’t travel anywhere that didn’t have pull bars or high seats for the bathroom commode. The struggle was real!! Also there are a lot of steps in some places, and some hotels that don’t have lifts. All good to investigate before planning a visit if you have someone who has to have these things taken into consideration.
