I Wish I Knew…Buying My First Car

This post is a collaboration with ATS Euromaster as part of their ATS Euromaster I Wish I Knew campaign, but all thoughts and experiences are my own

Buying a car for the first time is a big deal. It’s one of the first major expenses you might have. No one wants to invest in a rusty, damaged vehicle with thousands of miles on it that likely won’t get them from one destination to the next or through a car service long enough to make the investment worth it. However, many people fall victim to scams and end up buying vehicles that aren’t in the best condition.

What I Wish I Knew Before Buying My First Car

When you’re buying a car for the first time, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. One thing that I wish I knew before I invested money into a vehicle is that it’s not just about the mileage on a car. I was more concerned with finding a vehicle with low mileage without considering other factors, including the year it was produced and the safety features it comes equipped with to keep myself and the passengers safe and comfortable.

To be honest, one of the main factors with the first car I wanted, was how it looked, I wanted a beautiful blue Peugeot 306 that I often saw driving around the village, it was a 1.9 turbo diesel and too fast for what I needed, never mind how much the insurance was going to cost! Another car I liked the look of was a grey Beetle and I often thought about how I could get a lovely pattern on it too.

Car Servicing

I didn’t think about when buying my first car to look for any potential signs of rust. The thing about rust is that it can quickly cause parts of a vehicle to deteriorate, end up damaged, and break.

I didn’t think about checking under the bonnet or looking underneath the vehicle to spot signs of rust, which often means that a vehicle wasn’t properly maintained by the previous owners. Unfortunately, some car owners neglect their vehicles and fail to pay attention to car servicing requirements.

It’s also important to see if the previous owners have kept on top of oil changes, replacement parts, or anything like that, so you don’t end up spending more money on those services.

When you own it, whether it’s used or not, you need to get it serviced to keep it in good working order. If you’re neglecting the oil change, tyre rotation, and other routine services, it’s only going to cause damage to your car in the long run.

A car service is an important part of keeping a vehicle running. I’ve since learned the importance of checking the car service history to see how often previous owners have taken it into the garage, whether it’s for repairs or something as simple as an oil change. Gathering this information is the most effective way to make sure you’re investing in a reliable used vehicle when buying one from any dealership.
