Beating the Heat on Your Next Summer Getaway

October 26, 2026 by Jenni

Hot weather can drain your energy quickly when you’re exploring a new destination. A sensible summer travel plan should protect time for sightseeing whilst giving you regular chances to cool down, drink water and rest.

These practical changes can help you enjoy full days away without spending every afternoon feeling tired or overheated.

Planning Activities Around Midday Sun

Schedule energetic activities for the morning or late afternoon, leaving the hottest part of the day for lunch, museums or a quiet break. The sun is usually strongest around midday, although local forecasts will give you more accurate hourly temperatures and UV levels.

When booking accommodation, check recent reviews for comments about temperature control. Travellers visiting the Gold Coast may also want to understand when professional air conditioning servicing or repair is needed, particularly if they own a local holiday property.

Pack flexible ideas for indoor and outdoor time. These summer family activities can help fill cooler hours, while these travel cooling tips offer useful advice for warmer destinations.

Hydration Tips for Active Travellers

Start drinking water before you head out and carry a refillable bottle throughout the day. Waiting until you feel thirsty can leave you playing catch-up, especially during walking tours, cycling trips or long periods on public transport. Set a reminder every hour if you tend to forget.

Regular meals matter too. Fruit, yoghurt, salads and soups can contribute fluid alongside plain water. During prolonged exercise or heavy sweating, an electrolyte drink may be useful, but check the sugar content and follow any personal medical advice.

Learn to recognise headaches, dizziness, nausea and unusual tiredness as possible warning signs. Practical summer health guidance also recommends cooling down promptly when heat starts affecting how you feel.

Efficient Air Conditioning for Restful Breaks

A cool room offers valuable recovery time after several hours outdoors, but turning the thermostat to its lowest setting may leave the space uncomfortable and waste energy. Close curtains before direct sunlight reaches the windows, keep doors shut and use a ceiling fan to circulate cooled air more evenly.

Check that vents aren’t blocked by luggage, curtains or furniture. If the room still feels warm after 20 to 30 minutes, contact reception or your accommodation host instead of repeatedly changing the controls.

For better sleep, cool the bedroom shortly before bedtime and use the timer function where available. A moderate, stable temperature often feels more comfortable than a sharp drop that leaves you reaching for an extra blanket overnight.

Selecting Breathable Travel Fabrics

Choose lightweight clothes that allow heat and moisture to escape. Linen and loose cotton work well for relaxed sightseeing, while technical moisture-wicking tops are useful for hikes, bike rides and active days. A relaxed fit usually feels cooler because air can move between the fabric and your skin.

Colour also makes a difference in direct sunshine. Pale shades absorb less heat than very dark clothing, while a tightly woven fabric offers better sun coverage than a thin, loosely woven material. Check garments for a stated ultraviolet protection factor if you’ll spend hours outside.

Pack one light long-sleeved layer as well. It can protect your shoulders from strong sun and keep you comfortable inside heavily cooled restaurants, galleries and trains.

Heat feels far more manageable when each day includes a shaded lunch, a properly cooled rest and a bottle you refill before it runs empty. Check the hourly forecast each morning, then move your most energetic plan into the coolest available slot.
