Weekends with grandparents

October 4, 2022 by Jenni

Collaborative post

If the pandemic has taught us anything it’s that we should be cherishing the time we have with our elderly relatives while they’re still here. Finding things to do with your grandparents can be a little difficult though, as you might not understand what they enjoy or what they’re physically capable of. But there are still plenty of things you can do with your grandparents to show them you appreciate them and enjoy spending time with them.

Get away for the weekend

Having a weekend away from your grandparents will let you get to know them. If they are on the younger side and are still up for it, then a day out at a theme park like Alton Towers or Legoland could be a fun idea to base your getaway around.

If that sounds a little too much for them, however, a more relaxing weekend away in a holiday home on a park reserve where kids’ entertainment is provided could offer a perfect excuse to spend time with them. Looking into static caravans for sale in your holiday area can be a great bonding experience and one-on-one time. So, this could represent a sound investment for spending more time with your grandparents for years to come too.

Get creative

Creativity is not something that dwindles in old age. Indeed, after retirement, it could be argued that your grandparents have more time to indulge in their hobbies and experiment with their creative pursuits. If they’re interested in crafts, help them set up their own Facebook or Etsy page and sell their crafts online. Or if they like hiking, research local hiking trails you can take them on.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box either. With Halloween and Christmas coming up, you could get them interested in making costumes or even making fake snow to use on Christmas Day. Older people also typically enjoy gentle activities such as gardening, and yoga so don’t assume they want to sit around doing nothing just because they’re retired. Yes, some older people might be content to sit around playing Candy Crush Saga all day but that’s not the case for everyone.

Have a movie night

Having a movie night with a takeaway or some home-cooked food could raise the spirits of your grandparents. Make a day of it by putting together a themed event. Maybe you have a favourite trilogy of movies you want to share with them? Or maybe they have a few golden oldies that they want to share with you?

Don’t worry about them being bored by kids’ movies either. The best kids ‘movies are written to be as interesting for adults as they are for kids, after all.
