In this day and age of technology, staying fit and active is more important than ever, and that’s not just for adults, but for children too. Encouraging your children to stay fit and exercise can help speed up their growth and development, make them feel more active and energetic and help reduce childhood obesity.
Make it fun
Children love to have fun, so make sure your attempts to get them to exercise don’t seem boring. Find more activities that your child can enjoy doing and still get some exercise, going scavenger hunting, playing in an outdoor pool or just washing the car!
Just try to limit your kid’s screen time as much as you can, without putting in a lot of effort into it.
Be a Good Role Model
Children tend to watch and mimic what their parents do, and if they see you being physically active and having fun while you’re at it, they will be more likely to do the same.
Gift Smart
Instead of giving your child a fancy gadget for his birthday, gift him something that promotes physical activity. From children’s smart watches and rollerblades to footballs (there are plenty on Amazon) and ice skates, there are a good number of options and ideas out there you can try out!
Be Clever About holidays
Planning a holiday with your family? Do it smartly and you could unintentionally sneak in some physical activity there too. Consider different activities like hiking, kayaking, snorkeling and even just bicycle riding on your trip, and pack some good games that encourage your children to be more active.
Using Exercise as a Mode of Transport
If your childs school is a short distance from home, it can be the perfect opportunity for you both to get some exercise. Walk your way there or try roller skating or biking. If that’s not the case, you can still choosing walking as a mode of transport when hitting the nearby supermarket with your child.
Make it Social
Getting your child’s friends to play a sport together is way easier than asking your child to get out and exercise. Try to make exercise more of a social activity. Talk to other parents you know and co-ordinate on the timings and find a sport that everyone can enjoy together.
Sometimes, even if it is just throwing the frisbee back and forth with your neighbour’s child, it can help.
