7 Things To Do When Your Road Trip Takes a Wrong Turn

August 25, 2025 by Jenni

There’s nothing like the open road ahead of you, your favourite music blasting out of the car’s speakers, and a few days just to get away and explore everything you can on your travels to make you feel truly alive, right? That’s why road trips have really exploded in popularity in recent years, they give you the freedom you can’t often find in everyday life, and it’s amazing.

Of course, road trips are not all fun and sight-spotting, and they can and do frequently go wrong. So, it’s always good to be prepared for what you will do if your road trip takes a wrong turn…

Keep Your Cool

Easier said than done when the road has vanished and the map looks like abstract art, but panicking will only make things worse. Take a deep breath, pull over safely if you need to, and remind yourself: it’s an adventure, not a catastrophe.

Turn the Wrong Turn Into the Scenic Route

So you’re technically lost. Who cares? Some of the best discoveries happen when you veer off the “official” path. That winding road, random café, or weirdly oversized roadside sculpture you stumble across might just become the highlight of your trip.

Make Snacks Your Survival Kit

Rule number one of road trips: always pack more food than you think you’ll need. If you’re stuck waiting, at least you can tuck into crisps, biscuits, or that emergency chocolate stash. A good snack supply is basically insurance against stress.

Blast a Ridiculous Playlist

Silence makes mishaps feel heavier. Crank up the tunes, cheesy singalongs, guilty pleasures, or whatever makes you laugh. It’s hard to stay annoyed when you’re belting out an off-key chorus with the windows down.

Check the Car (Without Pretending You’re a Mechanic)

If your vehicle’s making a noise like it’s auditioning for a horror film, it’s worth a quick look under the bonnet. Sometimes it’s minor, like a loose cap or low fluid. Other times, it could be something more serious (say, an issue with a Detroit diesel cylinder head). You don’t need to diagnose it yourself, but knowing when to call in roadside assistance could save your trip.

Play Games to Pass the Time

If you’re stuck, break out the classics – “Would You Rather,” “I Spy,” or anything that doesn’t require a board or dice. Road trip games are like duct tape: not glamorous, but they hold everything together when things are falling apart.

Embrace the Total Chaos of it All

At the end of the day, the best road trips aren’t the ones that go perfectly. They’re the ones where everything went sideways, yet you ended up laughing until your stomach hurt. Wrong turns, flat tyres, and dodgy sat navs just add flavour to the story.

Road trips aren’t about perfection, right? They’re about adventure on the open road. So when things go wrong, don’t let it ruin the moment. Keep calm, snack often, laugh loudly, and remember: the best stories are born from the bits that didn’t go to plan, so don’t panic and embrace the journey, no matter how far off course it may take you!
