Ideal ways to connect with your family

July 23, 2024 by Jenni

Family life can be chaotic. With jobs, school, extracurricular activities and general life admin to manage, it can feel impossible to get quality family time. The pressure to get everything done can feel overwhelming as a parent, so family time is often left out of the equation.

Connection is such an important dynamic within families, especially for young kids. You may notice that the less connection time you have, the more it affects their behaviour.

Here are some tips to help you find your family’s connection again.

Family game nights

Game nights have been a hit with families for years, so consider making this a weekly or monthly event. It could be a Friday or Saturday night affair, or you could celebrate payday at the end of the month with a takeaway or selection of snacks and treats. The games market is huge so you can find games for the whole family. Board games aren’t the only option. Card games are also popular and hugely enjoyable. If new games are out of your budget, check your local charity shop for preloved games.

Outdoor adventures

Spending time outdoors is beneficial for the whole family in many different ways. Your physical and mental health will thank you.

If you have a garden, you can easily get everyone outside for a kickabout or game of catch. The best time of day to do this is before bedtime. Burning off energy and getting fresh air will help people of all ages get a better night’s sleep.

Local hikes are also a good way to get your family moving and chatting. Pick a spot with natural beauty, such as a waterfall, lake, or woodland. To encourage conversation and bonding, you could have a rule that devices stay in pockets or even in the car.

Hiking is not the only way to stay connected. You can also try a sport such as golfing as well. It’s an activity that you can do outdoors and it is enjoyed by people across all age groups. You can introduce the family to it by using indoor golfbays first to develop confidence with the game, then you can head outdoors to enjoy nature and a competitive but fun game.

Shared hobbies

Families naturally have things in common, and that can be a good place to start when it comes to spending time together. Following a sports team can be full of highs and lows, but it is nice to experience that together. You can even get matching football shirts to wear when you watch matches together.

Creative projects are also fun to do together. You could work on building a massive Lego set together or design your own Christmas cards to send to loved ones. Creative projects allow you to work together, a good skill to develop into adulthood.

Learning a new skill together, such as a new language or sport, provides opportunities for growth for all ages. You can practice at home or have allotted times for sporting practices. Rock climbing is an increasingly popular choice and is a workout for all ages.
