If you’re somebody who always feels cold, you know how annoying it can be to go through a winter. Ideally, you want your home to protect you against the discomfort of freezing toes and cold hands, but that’s easier said than done. A lot of properties lack the features for a cosy experience.
If this sounds like you, don’t worry. This article is here to help. We look at some warm winter home tips that you can follow so you can stay happy and warm all year.
Seal all your draughts
You’ll want to start by sealing all your drafts. Plugging gaps around your outlets, doors, and windows is one of the biggest things that you can do to prevent your home from feeling freezing cold when temperatures plummet outside.
Most people start this process by placing draft stoppers under their doors, sometimes called door snakes. This prevents cold air from coming in, especially through the front and back doors. If you can add weather stripping to switch plates and other outlets, then you can reduce the risk of cold air getting in even more. Finally, the most effective way to reduce drafts is to use winter insulation kits. These fill gaps around the window frame with foam so that cold air can’t get in.
Make sure your boiler is up to scratch
Next, think about whether your boiler is up to scratch and is able to continue piping warm water around your home. If it isn’t, then it will be difficult to get that cosy feeling when you’re inside. Sometimes a repair job is enough, or you may need a new boiler installation. Check with professionals to see what’s required. If you have a problem with your existing setup
Improve your window dressing
Another thing you might want to do is improve your window dressings by adding thermal curtains. These have special insulating layers that prevent heat loss from your room and stop cold air coming through the window from entering the internal space of your property, especially at night. They have overlapping closing segments that allow you to prevent drafts when the sun goes down. Sometimes they also have heat sinks that allow them to absorb radiation from any sunlight that you get during the day.
Use warm flooring
Many people don’t realise this, but cold can come in through the floor during the winter. Ground temperatures can plummet over the course of several weeks, so that by the time you’re in January or February, temperatures can be much lower than they were in June and July, even at depth. Therefore, cover your floor with an insulating layer and use carpets. Alternatively, you can run underfloor heating throughout your property, which looks great but also makes it feel warmer and cosier overall.
Add moisture to the air
Finally, if you’re living in a very dry climate, you might want to add some moisture to the air. Humidifiers can be a great way to bring humidity levels up to 40 to 60%, which is protective for your skin.
