Simple steps to take control of your finances

September 16, 2024 by Jenni

Tired of feeling like your finances control you? It’s understandable and common for many people, but there are ways to turn the tables. Here are some of the most fundamental steps you can take to gain control of your finances.

Create a budget you can stick to

To be in control, you need to understand. Understanding your finances means knowing exactly what you’re earning, how much you owe and where you’re spending your money.

Budgeting should be a key part of your financial toolkit. If it isn’t, make it so. Using an online budgeting tool or app, or just with a pen and paper, list your monthly income and all your expenses.

Taking your expenses away from your income should leave you with your disposable income. Or, if you spend more than you earn, how much you’re adding to your debt each month.

From here, you can start to make impactful changes.

Cut your expenses if you need to

If you are spending more than you earn, this is a big financial red flag. It’s simply not sustainable and means you’ll always be wracking up more debt and credit, rather than clearing it.

Take your list of expenses and scrutinise every single one. Consider if each could be reduced or even avoided entirely. The biggest costs are where you can make the most significant changes quickly – rent, transportation, lifestyle and food, most commonly.

If you have lots of luxury spending (things you want but don’t need), consider setting these aside until you’re in a better position with money. A little sacrifice will go a long way to taking control.

Start paying off high-interest debt

Once you have some money left over each month after your bills and expenses, you must use it wisely. Avoid the urge to spend anything left over. Use it to pay off any high-interest debts instead.

If you’re thinking about saving it, don’t until you’ve cleared any high-interest debts such as credit cards and personal loans. The longer these balances remain outstanding, the more they’ll cost you.

Pay off debt first and then start saving. Your future self will be far better off.

Use your disposable income wisely

Clearing your debts is a massive achievement. But the process doesn’t stop there. Taking control of your finances means looking to the future. Consider how you can best use your disposable income for benefits down the line.

An emergency fund can be useful to pay unexpected bills without reaccumulating debt, while you may want to start saving for a big purchase you’re planning.

Alternatively, you could explore stock trading or other investment opportunities to grow your money over time. Whatever you do, don’t let yourself get back into the situation you were in.

Taking control of your finances can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. Assess your situation closely and take the above steps to edge closer and closer to financial stability.
