The Uncomfortable Questions You Need to Ask Before Getting a Pet

August 20, 2025 by Jenni

It’s easy to fall in love with the idea of a pet, especially if you’re a new pet owner who’s only interacted with other people’s pets. You scroll through social media and you’ll see endless puppy eyes and kittens squeezed into baskets, and it all looks adorable. But pets aren’t props. They’re not just there for the cute photos or to boost your lifestyle aesthetic. They’re living beings who need attention, care, and consistency.

Before you give in to the temptation of those big brown eyes staring at you from the adoption centre, it’s worth pausing and asking if you’re genuinely ready for the commitment.

Would You Replace Them Right Away?

Getting to the most challenging question right at the beginning. Yeah, this one’s tough, but it matters. If the thought of losing a pet instantly makes you think about “just getting another one,” you may need to pause. A pet isn’t like a cracked phone you trade in for a new model.

They’re family, and again, they’re not a prop. Each one has their own personality, quirks, and bond with you. When they pass, there’s grief, and no new pet can erase that. If your instinct is to replace them immediately, it’s worth asking if you’re truly ready to see them as more than a temporary companion. Pets grieve their owners, and you’re expected to do the same for them. It’s obvious, but pets deserve to be loved as individuals, not swapped out when life gets hard.

Can You Afford the Unexpected?

You need to keep in mind that the cost of owning a pet isn’t just food and the odd new toy. There’s vet care, vaccinations, grooming, and training classes. But the real test comes with the surprises. Those surprises tend to be expensive too. Pets eat things they shouldn’t, get hurt when you least expect it, and fall ill without warning.

Even if you pet-proof your house, things can still just happen. That’s when an emergency vet becomes a reality, and those bills aren’t small. If the thought of a few hundred pounds for urgent treatment makes your heart race in panic, it might be worth thinking again. A pet is a financial responsibility as much as an emotional one.

Will You Still be Around?

Pets aren’t for now, they’re for years. Dogs can live 10 to 15 years, and cats often longer. Some animals live longer than that, like a tortoise or a parrot. That means you need to think long-term.

Are you likely to move somewhere that doesn’t allow animals? Are you planning big life changes that might make caring for a pet impossible? They’re not something you can hand back when life gets complicated.

Do You See them as Family?

This was mentioned earlier, but at the heart of it all, this is the real question. A pet isn’t a passing trend or something to fill a quiet weekend. They’re family. They’ll rely on you when they’re small, when they’re old, when they’re a bundle of energy, and when they’re sick. If you see them as disposable or just another accessory, then the answer’s simple: you’re not ready (and you probably never will be).
