Organising Your Home Workshop: Three Areas to Look At

March 20, 2026 by Jenni

When you’re occupied with DIY on the weekends, organisation is everything. It can make the difference between a project that comes together easily and a frustrating mess that takes far longer than it should to get finished.

As they say, to fail to prepare is to prepare to fail, and that couldn’t be truer here.

Even if you’ve only got a very small workspace, having things set out exactly as you like them with all of your equipment to hand makes a huge difference, and it doesn’t have to take a ton of work to achieve this state of efficiency.

In this short article, you’ll learn about three of the most important elements to focus on when it comes to having a space that’s a joy to work in.

Tool Storage Solutions

The benefit of having a space for each of your tools is twofold: it makes it easy to put your hand on them and protects them from getting damaged.

For smaller hand tools, peg boards work really well. You can fashion these however you like, and even if you don’t have many tools right now, this option gives you plenty of space to expand as you get more.

Tool chests are another great buy. These are a good idea for your heavy items, like circular saws, jigsaws, and routers, as they stay on the floor, meaning you’re not constantly lifting them off a shelf. Inside the chest, you can create custom dividers so that everything fits snugly.

Finally, see if you can incorporate drawers under your workbench to store small items you use for nearly every project.

Options for Screws and Fixings

If you’re someone who can never find the right screw or fixing, an organisational system for these bits of hardware will go a long way.

Start by making a bulk order to ensure you have everything you need (a good option is eFixings). From there, you can buy dedicated hardware organisers that come with labels, ensuring that whatever type of screw, nut, or bolt you need, you can always locate it quickly and easily.

You’ll likely be surprised by how much time this frees up (as well as at just how often you were irritably dashing to the hardware store before).

Work Zones

Even if you only have a relatively small space, you should do your best to divide the area into zones. This goes a long way in preventing everything from getting messy and confusing, and promotes a better workflow.

For example, you should have an area where you store raw materials, and this should be close to where you’d cut them down to size. You can have another area for finishing where you store your tins of paint and varnish, which is next to your sanding station.

Wrapping Up

You should now be a little clearer on how to be more organised when tackling your future DIY projects. As you can see, a little bit of effort goes a long way.
