Mistakes To Avoid On Your Next House Move

Don’t Make These Mistakes On Your Next House Move

Within the UK, most people move at least eight times, and on average, 100,000 households move to new residences each month. Relocating can be a big undertaking, and several things can go wrong, so before you pack your bags, there are a few things you’ll want to remember to ensure your relocation goes as smoothly as possible. Whether moving your family within the city or to a different country, avoiding these pitfalls will assist in safeguarding both your deposits and your sanity.

Not making arrangements for all appropriate documents

Get all your employment permit forms ready for international moves and research visa restrictions as soon as possible. You also want to plan for packing important documents like birth certificates, passports, social security cards, marriage or divorce certificates, or any other significant documents that may be necessary for the move—especially if it’s an international one.  Have a scan of each document in case they get misplaced during the journey. Even if you’re moving locally, you should still take the time to get all of your documentation in place. Now would also be a good time to hire a property solicitor to oversee your real estate transaction, as they can provide you with expert legal support regarding your transaction, while also making sure that your money is protected when exchanging. As they have your best interests at heart, you can count on them to provide you with the confidence you need to move forward.

Ignoring pre-move cleaning, maintenance, and repairs

Checking for any maintenance or repair work that needs to be addressed before you move is also important and could save you many headaches. Make sure that cleaning and maintenance tasks are done well before the move, so there’s no last-minute rush or surprises on moving day. House clearance is an important part of the moving process and can involve deep cleaning carpets, scrubbing tiles, and repainting walls if you want to go above and beyond.

Underestimating the relocation budget

It’s tempting to think that everything will be cheaper “out there,” but this isn’t always the case. You may spend more money on shipping, storage, and new furniture than anticipated.  Sit down and create a realistic budget before packing to avoid unexpected surprises. Make sure to factor in moving companies, packing supplies, and transportation costs. Bottom line: don’t skimp on your relocation budget. It will only lead to headaches and expenses down the road.

Failure to research prospective moving companies

Some moving companies are better than others. That’s why it’s important to research before selecting a moving company. How do you know which moving company is right for you?  Start by reading reviews and pay attention to the negative reviews. Another way to research potential moving companies is to ask your friends and family for recommendations.  Someone you know has used a moving company, and they can recommend a good one.

Movers’ licensing and insurance not checked

You should always check that your movers have the proper licenses and insurance. Not only could this protect your belongings in case something goes wrong, but it could also help you if something does happen. If you’re hiring movers, ask for their insurance and licensing copies.  You should also research the company and read reviews before deciding. Doing your due diligence will help ensure a smooth relocation process.

Not conducting a walkthrough before moving in

Visit the property before you move in, and note any problems, such as scratches on the floor, water spots on the ceiling, or damaged walls. Take pictures of each room and write down the damages already present, then inform the landlord. If the landlord or property manager plans to conduct their walkthrough after moving day, let them know immediately about any issues you.ve found. Doing this will enable you to demonstrate that previous damages were apparent before your move.

Going through your home with a fine-tooth comb and ticking off each task against a checklist is an efficient way to ensure you’re getting everything done, and by following these tips, you can avoid making common mistakes and set yourself up for a successful move.
