How To Make Your Garage Safe For Your New Car

August 20, 2026 by Jenni

Buying a new car is a major investment for many people, and it keeps getting bigger every year. Ultimately, the cost of living being what it is, cars are also affected, and they are certainly not getting more affordable. In fact, the average transaction price for a new vehicle in the U.S. reached almost $50,000 in June 2026. Figures are similar in the U.K. Even though not everyone chooses vehicles in that price range and many still opt for below that average, there’s no denying that more and more households are spending tens of thousands of dollars on a new set of wheels.

So, it makes sense that you’d want to protect your investment. That’s why many households keep their vehicle in a garage, since simply parking on your property or in front of your home isn’t enough anymore. But if you are going to bring your car into your garage, you want to make sure it’s a safe place.

Is The Garage Really Secure?

Parking inside puts another physical barrier between your vehicle and anyone who might want to steal or vandalise it. However, that protection depends on how secure the garage itself is.

Your garage door needs to be reliable and able to close completely. There’s no benefit in keeping the car in the garage if anyone can easily gain access to it. So, that is why you want to inspect the door closely to ensure there’s no obvious issue with it:

  • Clear signs of damage that prevent it from closing completely
  • Faulty locking mechanism
  • Opener that doesn’t work consistently
  • Etc.

It is also worth checking other potential entry points. Doors that connect the garage to the yard or the house, or even side windows, can be easily accessible, which defeats the purpose of having a garage door.

No Clutter in Sight

Your car may be safe from the outside world, but is it safe from your own clutter inside the garage?

Garages have an unfortunate habit of becoming storage rooms for DIY tools, bicycles, sports equipment, gardening supplies, ladders, etc. There’s so much that accumulates in the garage that you might find yourself squeezing the car into whatever narrow space remains.

To avoid any risk, declutter before you park your new vehicle. This is the opportunity to get rid of things you no longer need or use and to create proper storage solutions for everything else.

Use a Car Cover

It might seem unnecessary to cover a car that’s already indoors, but your garage doesn’t protect the paintwork from everything.

Even inside a garage, there’s a lot of dust, and it can accumulate even faster if you use a section of the garage for DIY projects. Breathable covers are designed to protect against dust and minor accidental contact.

Be careful, as some covers are indoor-only and others are outdoor-rated. Outdoor-use covers can help withstand the worst of the weather, which isn’t something you need for indoor storage.

Ultimately, if you are ready to spend close to $50,000 on the average new vehicle, protecting your investment is a no-brainer.
