How To Grow Your Leadership Skills For Your Career

Leadership is an important quality that many strive to achieve in their careers, especially if they see themselves as managers or supervisors one day. For those who are looking to run their own business, leadership is a core skill that they’re going to need in order to stand the best chance of survival as a small business or startup.

If you’re looking to grow leadership skills for your own career this year, here’s how to do it properly and with much success.

Start to listen more

As a leader, the best quality that you can have is the ability to listen. Of course, most people have no problem being vocal and speaking their minds on various topics but not everyone is effective when it comes to listening.

Often is the case that some will tend to talk over others in order to get their point across. Where you can, try to listen more and be more mindful of what people are saying to you, particularly those of your peers and those who report to you. By being a better listener, you become a better boss.

Take leadership development courses

There are lots of online courses out there that are worth exploring when it comes to leadership. Becoming a leader isn’t often something you’ll learn overnight and it takes time to build this quality and skill.

Therefore, it’s worth exploring what leadership development courses are available and is worth investing in. You’ll find plenty to choose from in leadership development courses in London, so it’s worth delving into the options available.

Have weekly or monthly meetings with staff

To help with building a rapport with your staff, try to allocate some time in the form of a weekly or monthly meeting. This is important because communication can often be lacking in the workplace. An absent leader is often one that isn’t available to communicate with on a regular basis and that can have a detrimental impact on business growth.

Look to organise some weekly or monthly meetings with staff members across the department or business you lead.

Find a mentor

Finding a mentor is something that any leader is likely to do at one point or another. If you’re fresh into the role or you’re building yourself up to the level of leader, it’s important to look for a mentor who is going to provide you with ample opportunities for growth.

Look for someone that you’ve been following for a while and look up to. These are some of the best mentors to have, rather than picking someone out at random from an agency.

Take criticism on the chin and embrace feedback

Criticism is something that comes with anything in life and as such, it’s good to take it on the chin. It’s important to embrace feedback too, so be aware of the feedback given and use it to your advantage.

Growing leadership skills takes time but is highly effective for a career path in a leadership role now or in the future.
