5 Essential Tips When Getting Your First Dog (& Make Sure They’re Comfortable)

February 26, 2026 by Jenni

Getting a dog can be an interesting idea for more than a few reasons. It’ll offer more than a few benefits, like letting you bring another family member into the home. If you have kids, they could’ve been asking for one for quite some time. There’s no reason not to get your first dog.

But you’ll need to know what you’re doing ahead of time. You’ll be taking on a lot of responsibility, after all.

Thankfully, this doesn’t need to be nearly as complicated as you’d think. More than a few tips and tricks can help with this, and some will have a whole lot more of an impact than others. They’ll even help to make your new dog as comfortable as possible once you’ve brought them home.

Five of these could end up helping a whole lot more than others.

Give Them Time to Acclimate

It’s natural for your new dog to be a little nervous once you’ve brought them home. It’s somewhere new for them, and you’ll be relative strangers. They’ll need to adjust and start getting used to everything before they properly come out of their shell. Be patient and give them the time they need for this.

Taking them home on a weekend and being there as they start getting used to everything is a great start. Let them explore their new home and give them a little space when they’re doing this, so they can start getting as comfortable as possible.

Don’t Forget Insurance

Dog insurance is always worth investing in for more than a few reasons. While you mightn’t end up using it regularly, it’ll help make sure you can cover any major medical expenses that could pop up. These are inevitable, even if some of them could seem relatively minor, and the overall cost could be quite high.

Nobody wants to end up in a position where they’ll have to take out a large loan just to get treatment for their dog. With health insurance for your dog, you shouldn’t have to worry about it, making it worth the monthly premiums.

Start Training Early

Training your dog is one of the more obvious areas to put the time and effort into. You wouldn’t want them to be wild around the house, after all. Get started on this as early as you can. You’ll need to focus on several areas when you’re doing this, like rewarding good behaviour and making sure they follow your orders.

This often takes a decent bit of time to do, which is why it’s worth starting early. It could also be worth considering a dog trainer to help with this if you’re struggling to train your dog. It’s a cost-effective way to make sure they’re as well-trained as possible.

Get Your Supplies

Before bringing your new dog home, it’s worth getting your supplies. That way, you wouldn’t need to worry about getting it done quickly once you have your dog. Thankfully, this could be one of the easier areas to sort out. You just need to know exactly which dog supplies you need to get.

A dog bed, quality food, play toys, and similar supplies will all be relatively obvious. Don’t forget to pick up poop disposal bags and other essentials, too, as these can be relatively easy to overlook. After that, you’re better prepared for bringing your new dog home.

Visit the Vet Soon

Visiting a vet with your new dog soon can often be recommended. It lets you get fully registered with them while giving your dog a chance to start getting comfortable with them. It’ll also let your vet get a baseline for your dog’s overall health. Even if your dog isn’t sick, it’s still worth doing.

Then there’s the fact that your vet can figure out if they need any treatments, like being spayed or neutered. While these aren’t mandatory, they’re recommended for more than a few reasons. You’ve no reason not to get to the vet early to sort all of this out.

You’ll want to get your first dog for more than a few reasons. They’ll be a new part of the family you’ll love for years on end. But you’ll need to be smart about it before jumping into dog ownership.

Getting a dog comes with a lot of responsibility, after all. By focusing on the right tips and tricks, however, this shouldn’t have to be nearly as hard as you’d think. Your new dog will be happy and comfortable before you know it.
