Keeping your computer working longer

If you rely on your computer on a regular basis, then you need to make sure that you’re able to cope with the headaches that can come with it. Managing your files effectively, avoiding eye strain, and making sure you don’t get a crick in your back from all that sitting are relatively simple problems to face. Obsolescence can be a little trickier. At some point, all devices have to be replaced. However, that’s naturally very expensive. If you want to keep yours a little longer, then here are a few ways you can do just that.

Sharpen its performance

If your device is starting to show its age, then you have to look at what you can do to improve its performance. You can start updating it with new hardware like additional RAM or a new hard drive, but when you’re paying for new components, you may as well look at funding the rest of a new device as well. Instead, you need to look at what the device will allow you to do internally. You can clean up space on your hard drive, as it will start to take the computer longer to hunt out files if there are a lot of them on your disk, and you can look at ways to save RAM, such as getting rid of unnecessary background programs.

Stop the updates (partially)

The problem with an older device isn’t just that yours is going to be less effective and efficient at running the programs that you currently have. It’s also a fact that your software is very likely to update and change versions, and these new versions will have higher specs, requiring more power and advanced tech to run. When the operating system changes, this problem magnifies even more. Learning how to downgrade your OS and roll back to previous versions of the software that you use most regularly can be vital. A lot of software manufacturers will keep download links for older versions of software. You have to be careful, however, as when you’re unable to update your software, you do become more susceptible to security issues.

Take care of it, physically, too

The better you take care of your device, the less likely it is to suffer damage that can start to degrade its performance, and the better condition the components will be in. Physically protecting your device, such as with a screen protector, body cases, and keyboard covers can help to prevent all kinds of damage. Using a can of compressed air, you can open up your device to gently blow out the dust and debris that gets caught in there. Just make sure that you have your device entirely powered off before you do that.

The march of time cannot be stopped and, in most cases, you’re going to have to upgrade eventually. However, keeping your old beast ticking along for longer can make it a lot easier to have time to put the money together for a new device.
