The best stove for cooking

What Type of Stove is Actually Best for Cooking?

There’s a pretty big market for appliances that are both trustworthy and affordable, and it’s growing by the day. But while it’s ultimately a good thing that consumers have so many choices, many also deal with the problem of choice fatigue. This may be something you’ve experienced while shopping for kitchen appliances for cooking. Does it really matter whether you buy a gas stove, an electric stove, or an induction stove?

As far as stoves are concerned, the answer is yes. You may have to do a little research to see which option is best for you, but it may ultimately help you save money, make good use of the space in your home, and ensure that cooking is a more satisfying experience for you overall.

How can you determine which stove is the best one, and what should you consider when you buy gas range stoves, induction cooktops, electric cooktops, or hotplates? Here’s a guide that will show you the best stoves for certain applications and how to get your money’s worth on your new appliance.

The Best Stove for Cooking Multiple Dishes

Are you in charge of feeding a large household, or are you the type of cook who likes to multitask? If you said “yes” to one or both of these questions, then you’ll need a stove that allows you to be flexible and manage different types of cookware efficiently at the same time.

The ideal choice for a cook who wants to satisfy a big crowd with a variety of dishes is a gas range stove, or a standalone appliance that features multiple burners plus an oven. This type of stove will allow you to be highly precise when adjusting the heat levels on different pots and pans, as well as bake or broil something in the oven at the same time.

Due to their size and the number of features they possess, gas ranges typically command a higher price than their single-burner induction or electric hotplate counterparts. But they are definitely worthwhile investments for cooks with busy kitchens.

The Best Stove for Cooking in a Small Kitchen

On the flip side, for cooks who have very little space to work with—and who are content to prepare quick and easy meals that are good for one or two—the most economical options are induction stoves, electric cooktops, or simple hotplates. These stoves come in handy for dorm or studio apartment-type homes in condominiums, where there’s minimal space for cooking and where there are often restrictions on cooking with an open flame.

Electric cooktops, hotplates, and induction cooktops all require electricity to operate, but they rely on different methods to heat food. Hotplates and electric cooktops enact the process of thermal conduction, or transferring heat from the surface of a burner to the cookware and then to the ingredients that are being cooked. Induction cooktops, however, heat cookware using powerful electromagnetic energy. This often results in shorter cooking times, which is great for dishes that require extensive boiling or simmering.

The ideal choice of electric cooking appliance really depends on your budget and the food you like to prepare. Electric cookers and hotplates afford simpler and cheaper setups, while induction cooktops tend to be a little more expensive in exchange for superior heating power. Either way, all three are great solutions for a small home kitchen.

The Best Stove for Energy-Efficient Cooking

There’s another good argument to be had for induction cooktops: they are often the more energy-efficient stoves compared to electric and gas stove appliances. Their electromagnetic heating process generates strong and even heat, which decreases heat energy loss and results in significant energy savings.

If you’re the type of cook who wants to shrink their environmental footprint—or simply shrink the expenses on their electric bill—an induction cooktop is a good investment for its energy efficiency.

The Best Stove for Cooking with Ordinary Cookware

For all the benefits associated with induction cooking, there is a drawback. Induction cooktops require specialty cookware to facilitate the induction heating process, which can leave a large dent in your wallet.

In contrast, gas stoves and electric stoves can accommodate any kind of cookware that you may already have on hand. That means that you won’t have to make such a big adjustment to the way you cook via the tools you use if you decide to stick with a gas stove, electric stove, or hotplate. So don’t forget to take your cookware into consideration when you’re shopping for a new stove.

The Bottom Line: Choose According to Your Needs and Preferences

Each of the items above presents a rationale for working with a particular type of stove. But the best choice for you really depends on your situation and your priorities. The important thing is to buy a stove that fits your constraints in terms of space or budget—and one that’s capable enough of cooking the dishes that you and your loved ones like to eat.
