Périgueux’s centre is small and mainly pedestrianised, with alleys and narrow streets dominating the town. This city is also home to some stunning Medieval and Renaissance architecture.

The market is located throughout the town centre. Périgueux’s market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays. Large sections of the old town, particularly around the Cathedral, are packed with stalls selling all of Perigueux’s cuisine specialities, including foie gras, duck specialities, sausages, cheeses, nuts, wine, fruit, and vegetables. You can also find some craft stalls around the market, so check them out.
There is also a garden near the Cathedral where you and the kids can rest after showcasing your bargaining skills.

The Gallo-Roman ruins, which a glass museum protects, were constructed to preserve a French historical monument. The remains of the huge homes are breathtaking, with paintings dating back to the first century. The museum has an excellent permanent exhibition that will allow the kids to walk among the ruins on elevated paths.

Cathédrale Saint-Front de Périgueux
Cathédrale Saint-Front de Périgueux is a Roman Catholic cathedral of Périgueux. It has been designated a historical monument since 1840 and a World Heritage site since 1998. The cathedral was named after Saint Front, the first bishop of Périgueux.
The 12th-century cathedral is a massive structure with five symmetrical domes and a magnificent bell tower that influenced the design of Abadie’s domes that define its skyline, and it’s well-known throughout the country.
The cathedral was nearly devastated during the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century, but it was carefully rebuilt in the 1800s by Paul Abadie, who also worked on the Notre-Dame de Paris. The cathedral’s interior is cross-shaped, and it houses a magnificent organ.
The best time to take the kids to the cathedral is while the organ is playing, or a choral concert is taking place because the acoustics will captivate them!
The Cathedral is located at Pl. de la Clautre, 24000 Périgueux, France. They are open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM.
Voie Verte des Berges de l’Isle
The Voie Verte des Berges de l’Isle is a 15-kilometre greenway that runs from east to west across the Périgueux “agglo” and is popular with locals and visitors. This Greenway is accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, and individuals in wheelchairs, allowing you to wander easily across Périgueux’s whole urban area.
You may hire a bike in town with the kids and go on two wheels or just walk down the next track. This walkway connects you to a wide network of trails designed to allow you to explore the region without driving.
The route starts at Trélissac or Bassillac and continues along the Isle at the foot of Périgueux’s historic centre, then a canal, then the river again to the green area of Marsac-sur-l’Isle. The walk never leaves the banks of the River Isle for the whole period of the trip, promising healing nature and unrivalled views of attractions like the Saint-Front Cathedral.
The surface is smooth and of excellent quality asphalt, making it excellent for the kids to go rollerblading. Picnic tables, seats, and rubbish bins are also along the walkway.
Voie Verte des Berges de l’Isle is located at 102 Rte du Chambon, 24430 Marsac-sur-l’Isle, France. They are open 24/7.
Voie Bleue des Berges de l’Isle
Another great way to explore the best parts of Périgueux with the kids is to take a canoe ride on the crystal-clear waterways of the Isle.
The Voie Bleue des Berges de l’Isle is a 24-kilometre watercourse parallel to the Voie Verte that runs from Trelissac (Charriéras) in the east to Marsac (La Roche) in the west.
They offer 12 designated launch places and four canoe stations, with information, restrooms, drinking water, and anything else that a family of explorers would want to spend a canoeing holiday and explore the river’s marvels in peace.
