July 26, 2024 by Jenni

Châtelaillon-Plage, on the picturesque Atlantic coast in the department of Charente-Maritime, is a seaside resort that offers various activities for visitors of all ages. Known for its enchanting landscapes, rich history, and vibrant local culture, Chatelaillon is the perfect place to create unforgettable moments. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or an extended stay, here’s a guide to the top attractions and activities in and around this charming town.

A Glimpse of History and Culture

History of Chatelaillon-Plage

Chatelaillon was the capital of Aunis, a former French province in the 12th century. Over the years and due to historical events leading to the decline and ruin of the local lordship, it continued to decline and eventually became a mere hamlet.

The revival of the town began at the end of the 19th and early 20th century, following the appearance of ‘sea bathing’ becoming fashionable.

In 1989,the mayor of Chatelaillon plage decided to replenish the beach and between 1989 to 1991, more than 330 000m3 of sand was placed. At the end of this project, Chatelaillon regained between 2.5 and 3km long beach with an average width of 60m.

This revival gave an extraordinary impetus to the town and the number of tourists rose from 4000 to 44,000 a year between 1984 and 2000.

In the year 2015, the expansion of the northern part occured, reloading more than 80,000 m3 of sand drawn in off the island Oleron.

Interesting facts about Chatelaillon beach

Due to the currents, the foreshore is covered with silt, soil particles mixed with organic debris that can be likened to mud. This silt contains trace elements that can benefit the skin.

In the Summer, the sea is probably the hottest in France. The water can reach 30 degrees C at high tide.

During low tide, you can explore further into the beach and find mussels, oysters, clams, prawns and shrimps. You must put the stones in their original position after you have looked and not remove any stones or shells from the beach.
