Packing Tips for a Winter Family Getaway in Scotland

December 19, 2024 by Jenni

Scotland is a beautiful place to visit during the winter months. With stunning snow-capped mountains, cosy log fires and fun winter activities, it makes for the perfect winter family getaway with kids of all ages, from toddlers to teens. However, with the cold weather, packing appropriately is key to having an enjoyable trip. Here are some top tips for packing for your winter family holiday in Scotland.

Choose Warm and Waterproof Outerwear

The number one rule when packing for Scotland in winter is to bring warm and waterproof clothing. Temperatures can often drop below freezing, with winds bringing an extra chill factor. Be sure that everyone has a good quality winter coat, waterproof boots, hats, scarves and gloves. Look for coats with insulated layers to help retain body heat. Waterproof outer layers are essential as Scottish winters can be very wet. Wellies or hiking boots make sensible footwear to deal with mud and slush. Don’t forget extra dry socks too!

Layer Up

Using multiple layers is the key to staying warm if you are fostering in Scotland and are planning to take your children away for the weekend. Start with thermal long johns and long sleeve tops as a base layer. Mid-layers like thick jumpers and fleeces help trap heat. Top with a warm but lightweight jacket for outdoors. Having several thinner layers allows you to easily add or remove layers as needed. That way you can stay comfortable whether indoors by a cosy fire or outdoors exploring the beautiful Highlands.

Pack for Indoor and Outdoor Fun

Scotland provides lots of opportunities for family fun both indoors and out. Packing clothes suitable for both settings means you’ll be ready for anything. Outdoor gear like ski trousers and jackets allow you to enjoy winter walks, build snowmen or try sledding. Indoor relaxing clothes like pyjamas, onesies and slippers make perfect apres-ski wear. Don’t forget swimwear either if your accommodation has a pool or hot tub!

Choose Practical Footwear

When packing shoes, include warm snow boots or wellies, hiking boots, trainers and comfy shoes for indoors. Waterproof snow boots with good grip are great for snowy landscapes. Hiking boots work for more active pursuits like winter climbing. Trainers are handy for indoor activities. Pack slippers or comfy shoes for relaxation time at your accommodation. If you are taking foster children on a trip to Scotland, they may not have any suitable footwear, so factor in some time to go shopping before you leave.

Take Cosy Sleepwear

Scotland’s winter nights can get very cold, so packing pyjamas, dressing gowns and slippers is a must. Look for cosy fleece pyjamas or even one piece fleece onesies which are popular for after skiing. A hot water bottle is great for taking the chill off beds on very cold nights too.

With some careful packing and preparation, your family will be ready to fully embrace all the magic and adventure of a Scottish winter getaway. Just follow these tips so you have all the right gear, layers and footwear needed to stay warm, cosy and comfortable whether enjoying outdoor snowy landscapes or relaxing by a cosy log fire.
