A nature lover’s guide to Tenerife

May 7, 2025 by Jenni

You don’t need to travel halfway around the world to feel far from the noise of modern life, and on Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, nature still takes centre stage. While many visitors come for the sunshine, you can find something quieter and more grounded if you look beyond the resorts.

Hiking in the Anaga Rural Park

Set out early to hike the ridgelines of Anaga Rural Park, a mountainous region tucked into the island’s northeast corner. The trails wind through ancient laurel forests while local farmers still work terraced fields.

Choose a route that suits your pace. The Cruz del Carmen to Punta del Hidalgo trail offers dramatic sea views without being punishing. Bring layers and snacks as the weather changes quickly, and cafés are few and far between.

Experiencing the views at Mount Teide

You don’t need to summit Spain’s highest peak to feel its impact, though if you do, the cable car shortens the journey. Mount Teide dominates the centre of the island and, on clear days, the views reach across the Atlantic to other Canary Islands.

If you walk one of the perimeter trails, like the Roques de García loop, you’ll see lava formations that look sculpted by time itself. Wear sturdy shoes and drink plenty of water to help combat the dryness and high altitude.

Relaxing at Playa de Benijo If you’re looking for holidays to Tenerife that feature a quieter coastal experience, this spot offers peace and calm. Located on the north coast, the black volcanic sand contrasts with the foaming Atlantic surf. It’s not a swimming beach due to the strong currents but it’s the perfect place to let your senses reset.

Stargazing in Teide National Park

Once the sun dips below the horizon, don’t head straight back to your accommodation. Teide National Park is a designated Starlight Reserve, and the lack of light pollution makes it one of the best places in Europe for stargazing.

Join a guided night tour if you’re not familiar with the constellations. The guides use lasers to point out details and explain what you’re seeing, and you’ll likely spot planets, meteor showers and even the Milky Way stretching across the sky. Just bring warm clothes as the temperature can drop sharply after dark, even in summer.

Exploring the Masca Valley

Tucked in the Teno Mountains, this remote gorge feels like it belongs in another era. You can walk the descent from the village to the coast, but be prepared for uneven ground and a long climb back up. The path follows a riverbed through rock tunnels and lush greenery. Just remember to wear proper walking shoes and take plenty of water.
