Family-friendly Yorkshire attractions

August 15, 2023 by Jenni

The home of the humble Yorkshire pudding, stainless steel and Wensleydale cheese, Yorkshire is a county with plenty to offer.

If you’ve grown fed up with sitting indoors waiting for the summer weather to arrive after an exceptionally wet few months, we’ve got your back. Here are some family-friendly Yorkshire attractions to add to your list if you want to do something fun, come rain or shine.

The Deep, Hull

Looking for a rainy-day activity that’s guaranteed to leave you feeling great? Look no further than The Deep. As the county’s favourite underwater adventure, The Deep is an epic aquarium that lets you discover the fascinating lives of creatures beneath sea level. With a whole host of aquatic creatures to gaze at and interactive exhibitions aplenty, you won’t get bored with a visit here.

With sharks, penguins, turtles and over 3,500 species of fish to discover, you’re in for a treat!

Clip n’ Climb, Ilkley

With centres in 50 countries around the world, including more than 60 in the UK, Clip ’n Climb has become a global phenomenon, reinventing the world of indoor climbing. For a healthy, social and fun-filled afternoon, head to Clip and Climb and see how high you can go.

It’s one of the more affordable activities, making it ideal if budgets are tight during the current cost of living crisis.

Jorvik Viking Centre, York

Having opened its doors in 1980, the Viking Centre in York is as exciting today as it was when it first opened. Suitable for children (and adults!) of all ages, this unique centre gives you a taste of what life was really like back in the day. It even has renowned ‘smell technology’ that replicates a 10th-century stink!

If you are planning on visiting a few places in York, you may want to invest in the York Pass to save money on entrance fees.

As such, it’s a great place to visit with family and friends. If you are planning to reach the centre by car, it’s a good idea to get insurance for a day in case the designated driver is too tired to drive at the end of the day.

York Dungeons

If you haven’t yet explored York’s notorious dungeons, you should! A day out at the York Dungeon is the ideal way to experience the ghastly side of Yorkshire. During the 75-minute journey back in time, you’ll learn all about York’s blood-curdling history.

As well as terrifying surroundings, you’ll be graced with special effects and actors – both of which will shake you in your boots.

Flamingo Land, Malton

If horrible histories aren’t your thing, head to Flamingo Land instead. As well as the obvious, at this fully-fledged zoo, you’ll find child-friendly rides, death-defying vertical drops and funky log flumes that’ll make an almighty splash.

With so many family-friendly Yorkshire attractions, there’s guaranteed to be something that tickles your fancy. So, grab your raincoat, pack a bag and get in the car – it’s time to explore.
