Smarter Storage for Spring Living

Spring is just around the corner, and it’s the ideal moment to give your home a refreshing makeover (no pressure, but 79% of UK adults consider a “spring clean” as a rigorous clear-out, not just a light tidy, according to UK Industry Research, 2024). As the seasons shift, it’s a fantastic chance to consider new ways to organise your belongings. Here are some easy tips and ideas to help you store things more effectively this spring.

What Do You Need?

The winter months are notorious for accumulating extra stuff, whether it’s Christmas decorations or winter clothing. Lots of us head into spring needing a good declutter and reset.

Start by taking a good look around your home. Which items do you really need, and what’s just taking up space? Think about the things you use every day and those that are gathering dust in the corner or creating dead space in cupboards.

Seasonal Storage Swaps

When you need to reclaim some home space, consider seasonal swaps as a smart self storage habit.

Winter clothes and heavy linens (from throws to curtains and all in-between) could all be tucked away into self storage units to make room for lighter spring living. Use sturdy, stackable bins to maximise space, and label them clearly for easy access later.

And don’t forget, you can install a freestanding chest or hanging rail in your storage room to help organise clothes.

Multi-Functional Furniture

If you’re updating your decor as well as your storage, multi-function furniture is a game-changer. Look for pieces like ottomans with hidden storage, beds with drawers or side tables with shelving. They make short work of corralling the odds and ends that create a cluttered look.

When space is short, it’s all about finding a balance between form and function. Furnishings with a storage aspect are useful all over the house.

You can also look for underused areas that could be storage, such as over doorways or under beds. Shallow boxes on wheels or high-up shelves can help keep the floor clear.

Creative Solutions for Kitchen Items

Use wall-mounted racks for tools or kitchen utensils to keep things tidy. Magnetic strips can hold knives and scissors. From a safety angle, keeping knives out of drawers is a good idea if you can manage it.

Use freestanding racks and shelves in cupboards to maximise space, and install hooks or rails on walls or cabinets for pot holders, towels, or your spice collection. Magnetic hooks work great on fridges for hanging lightweight items, and a revolving lazy susan is useful inside the fridge for bottled sauces, pickles or jams.

Beating Overwhelm

Decluttering your home can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to put it off, even when it’s something you really want to do.

Instead of looking at the whole house, or even the whole room, break it down even further. Look at one cupboard, one drawer, or one corner of the bedroom. Tackling just a small area gives you a quick win, and makes a big difference. Take time to appreciate the improvement, and use the good feeling for motivation to attack another small area.

Throw broken things directly into the bin rather than just moving them around to deal with later. If you have items good enough for charity, bag them up immediately and put the bag in the car.

Heirlooms, seasonal clothing, furnishings not used but wanted, are all items for self storage so they’re safe but not under your feet. Box them up so they’re ready to transport.

Garden Storage Solutions

Outside spaces come into their own once the weather brightens up, and seasonal self storage can help here too.

Make room in the shed for the barbecue gear, the bikes and extra garden seating. Leaf blowers, snow shovels, sledges or other winter sports kit don’t necessarily need to take up space at home. They’re better kept in low cost self storage until their season rolls back around.

Installing wall-mounted racks or shelves in the garage or shed will help keep outdoor tools organised and safe. Everything helps to keep the garden as spacious and relaxing.

It can be a bit tricky finding a storage solution that actually works. Local storage units work because they’re a holding area for things you’re not using right now. You’re not getting rid of precious seasonal items, you’re just rehousing them while they’re out of season. It’s all about making the most of space in your home so you can enjoy this lovely spring season and look forward to the promise of summer.
