A Practical Guide to Choosing the Right Driveway Material

March 4, 2026 by Jenni

When replacing your driveway, you’ll want to choose the right material.

There’s a lot to think about when it comes to picking out a new driveway material. From balancing initial installation costs and long-term maintenance, as well as durability against your local climate, and above all, your aesthetic preferences.

Some homeowners prefer the typical asphalt and gravel, whilst others may look at the benefits of resin driveways.

Let’s take a look at some of the common driveway materials as well as some of the key selection factors when choosing the right one.

Common driveway materials used

When deciding on materials, there are some common driveway options to consider.

Gravel and aggregates

Typically, one of the most cost-effective and easiest to install, if doing it yourself, is with gravel and aggregates. Gravel is a highly permeable material and also serves as a subtle security feature because of the sound it makes underfoot.

It’s something, though, that will require regular aking and periodic top-ups. That’s something to consider when choosing this material.

Asphalt

A robust and durable choice that is often less expensive than concrete. It’s particularly well-suited for those used to colder climates because it can expand and contract without cracking during freeze-thaw cycles.

Concrete

Known for its extreme durability, concrete often lasts 30-50 years with minimal maintenance.

While long-lasting, concrete can be prone to cracking in very cold regions, especially if not properly installed.

Block paving

Block paving offers high aesthetic appeal and is easily repairable. Individual blocks can be replaced if damaged.

It’s a more labour-intensive effort to install, though, and may require some regular weeding between joints, too.

Resin-bound

A modern and permeable option combines natural aggregates with a resin binder. This, in turn, provides a smooth, slip-resistant finish. It’s highly regarded for its low maintenance and can also simplify planning permission processes through its compliance.

Key selection factors to consider

When narrowing down your choice of driveway materials, there are some critical, practical elements to consider. These include the following:

Climate resilience

In areas with heavy rain, permeable materials like gravel or resin-bound are advisable because they help reduce surface water accumulation.

In hotter climates, light-coloured materials like concrete often reflect sunlight and stay cooler as a result.

Maintenance level

If you prefer a ‘fit and forget’ solution, the use of patterned concrete or resin-bound surfaces will offer the lowest ongoing maintenance.

Gravel and block paving will require more active maintenance to address stone displacement and weed control.

Regulations

Driveways over 5m² will require SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) compliance to avoid planning permission. Permeable pavers and resin-bound systems are designed specifically to meet those standards.

Load bearing

For driveways used by heavy vehicles, block paving and reinforced concrete are much more superior due to the structural strength they offer.

Choosing the right driveway material is essential, so use this guidance to find the right one for your needs and wants.
