Avoid Falling Into The Same AI Traps As Your Competion: 4 Vital Techniques

July 29, 2025 by Jenni

It’s fair to say we’re well in the midst of the “AI gold rush”, with businesses and even governments investing billions in the promise of the future tech. It is likely also to have your competition scrambling to implement its promised solutions faster than they can properly understand whether these tools make sense for their specific needs. Everyone seems terrified of being left behind, which is understandable given how quickly AI capabilities are advancing and the extensive media coverage the technology receives every day.

As with any new trend, the rush to adopt AI has led to some predictable mistakes across industries, and many businesses are making the same errors their competitors made six months ago. They’re throwing money at AI tools because they feel like they should, implementing chatbots that frustrate customers, or using AI-generated content that sounds robotic at best. You can probably spot AI-copy from a mile off now.

The problem isn’t AI itself, which can still be quite useful when applied thoughtfully to the right problems. However, a major issue is businesses copying what they think successful companies are doing with AI without understanding why certain approaches work or how to adapt and scale them.

Maybe you’re tired of this, which is understandable. If so, this post will be geared to helping you, yourself, avoid that trap of falling into the same AI dead ends as others are. Let’s get started:

Customers Understand If You’re Measured Right Now

A huge trap businesses are falling into, as we write this post, is implementing AI solutions simply because they feel pressure to keep up with competitors who are discussing their AI initiatives, even when those competitors might not be achieving good results. FOMO is real. Unfortunately, it can also waste money for poor results.

If your main competitor starts using an AI chatbot on their website, you might feel like you need one too. However, if your customer service is already excellent, people may prefer to call or email you directly. Adding a chatbot that can’t handle complex questions properly could worsen your customer experience, frustrating long-term clients and costing you money every month for marginal productivity improvements.

To avoid falling into that trap, spend a good deal of time figuring out what problems you’re trying to solve and whether AI is the best solution for those problems on a granular level, or how a specific utility could be improved without further delayed impact. Perhaps it will be, but not as a value-added presentation to your clients on the back end. It’s okay if you test that a little before the rollout.

Customise AI Tools For Your Specific Business Needs

Many businesses make the mistake of using AI tools exactly as they come out of the box without taking time to train them on their specific industry, customer base, or business processes. An LLM is only as good as how you prompt it. If you don’t, you’ll suffer generic responses that don’t help customers and content that sounds like it could come from any company in your field.

Take AI writing tools as an example; the default settings might generate blog posts or social media content that’s technically correct but doesn’t align with your brand voice or address your audience’s understanding or needs. That wastes their time, and your time too. If you don’t have worthwhile customisation like that, you end up with content that sounds like it could have come from any one of your competitors.

You can show these tools examples of your best work, training them on your terminology and style preferences, and then focus on their settings based on the results they produce. It might take a month or so to get it right. Just don’t pay an “AI prompt engineer” as this value is rarely as useful as it sounds, and they won’t have the insight you do.

Focus On High-Value Internal & Automated Tasks First

If an AI tool saves you 5% of your daily time on a repetitive task, that’s a bonus, and you can then look at gently scaling it more. Many firms, unfortunately, have used AI on tasks that should require complex human judgment or creativity.

For instance, AI can be excellent at sorting through large sets of data, putting together initial drafts of routine documents, or handling simple customer inquiries. Yet, remember it still struggles with nuanced decision-making, creative problem-solving, or understanding complex customer emotions and motivations. There’s every chance your “AI-powered” chatbot could dismiss or even insult you as easily as it tries to help.

As such, be sure to focus on high-value internal tasks first, and then you’ll find your path forward.

Train Your Team To Work With AI Tools

Because prompting seems pretty intuitive, many businesses buy AI software and expect their employees to figure out how to use it effectively on their own. That will only yield poor results and frustrated staff members who may resist using the technology altogether. That’s because they need to understand the technology first to really leverage it in their workflow. AI can also be vague in its application; it’s essential to be specific.

It’s wise to learn how high impact media feeds AI through digital PR campaigns can work for you. If your marketing team understands how to ensure their brief aligns with their wider goals, reviews and continues to manage the feeds they’re trying to influence, and combines that with their current advertising campaign approach, you’ll get much more value out of outsourcing. With this advice, you’ll be certain to avoid falling into the same difficult traps that many other companies do. A healthy dose of scepticism and focusing on how to be proactive, not just reactive and chasing what other firms are doing, is going to help you. Of course, it’s only 2025, and the use of this tech is still in its early stages. It’s okay if you breathe a little first.
