Why you should visit Northumberland

Why Northumberland Should Be Your Next UK Destination

People are often drawn to hotter and sunnier places for their holidays, or perhaps to countries where there’s a decent amount of snow. But for anyone who lives in the UK, there’s plenty of fun to be found without ever leaving the country. The weather might be a bit less predictable, but there are some stunning parts of the country that you really don’t want to miss out on. Northumberland, in the northeast of England, is definitely one of the regions that everyone should visit at least once. It’s family-friendly, as well as welcoming to all sorts of travellers. For entrepreneurs it can also be a place for starting a business and extending your company.

Beautiful Places to Stay

Northumberland has some incredible places to stay that are great for families, couples, friends, or even people travelling on their own. You have an amazing range of hotels, B&Bs, inns, and hostels to choose from, as well as different types of self-catering accommodation. If you’re looking for a relaxing place to stay, somewhere like the Castle Inn Bamburgh is perfect for finding a comfortable room, delicious food and drink, and wonderful surroundings too. If you choose the right accommodation, you’ll hardly want to leave, although you will have plenty of options for entertaining yourself during your stay.

Rich History

Northumberland has some wonderful history, including a great selection of castles that you can explore. In fact, there are over 70 sites, ranging from castles that are still standing to some impressive ruins. There’s Alnwick Castle, which has been used in some of the Harry Potter films, Chillingham Castle, where you can stay overnight if you want to, and the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. For even more history, head to The Holy Island of Lindisfarne (where you’ll find yet another castle), home to the 12th-century Lindisfarne Priory, which was once ransacked by Vikings in the 700s.

Outdoor Adventures

Northumberland is the perfect destination for anyone who loves the outdoors. It offers some magnificent scenery and a choice of different environments, including forests and coastlines. It’s a great place for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, and you can even go surfing if you’re brave enough to get in the sea. Northumberland’s lakes and reservoirs offer incredible water spots, where you can try anything from seal watching to fishing. You can also find some amazing dark sky spots in the region, making it perfect for stargazing. Head to the Kielder Observatory within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.

Attractive Towns and Villages

Even if you don’t want to get out into nature, Northumberland has plenty of pretty villages and towns with lots to do. There are many different places you can visit, depending on what you’re looking for. Berwick-Upon-Tweed is a beautiful historical town on the border with Scotland, while lovely coastal villages like Seahouses and Alnmouth offer places to get away from it all. You can find lots of countryside spots too, such as Corbridge and Rothbury.

Make Northumberland your next destination if you’re looking for somewhere new to explore and lots of things to do.
