A Confident Child: Helping Our Children Float by Themselves in a Big World
As our children get older, they slowly grow into themselves, whether they are becoming a teenager or entering the next phase of their life. The most important thing we need to give them as they start to find their way in the world, whatever age they are, is the confidence in which to deal with the things that come their way. Building self-worth can be difficult, especially if you didn’t have any yourself. This is why it’s important to give them trust in their abilities and capabilities. So what are the things that we need to remember?
Confidence Comes from the Inside Out
Children are going to feel like they are on display, especially as they get older; image is something that we shouldn’t completely ignore and say it’s “not important,” because we all remember our own insecurities. Something like braces is a very common concern, and if you, as parents, may be worried about teeth aligners price changes and you might not be able to afford to give them braces, you have to focus on the “inside out” approach. Giving them the tools to develop that inner confidence, in terms of either practising being calm, learning to control stress, and many skills associated with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can make a difference in how they perceive themselves and be more confident and capable individuals.
Encourage New Things
Confident children are going to want to try new things. It’s about making sure that children understand that there is a whole new raft of possibilities at every turn. We all like the idea of being comfortable, but the fact is that the big wide world is there to be explored. You can create a comfortable home environment for them by giving them structure and a roof over their heads, but the rest should be about them trying new things. If they’re already skilled in a number of things in life, encourage them to try something different. Diversification is going to make them feel like they can get stuck into problems and tackle anything that comes their way.
Mistakes Aren’t the End of the World
We’ve got to stop thinking that mistakes are a big problem. When a child makes a big mistake, it’s important that they own up to it and are accountable, but we’ve got to help our children see that mistakes are just a part of life and cannot be avoided, but the reason they are there is that they can learn from them. After all, if we didn’t try something new for fear of failure, we’d never know what we can achieve.
Be Loving Parents
Above all else, if you want to have a confident child that is comfortable in their own abilities, you need to ensure they feel like they matter and that you love them no matter what. Our children need to feel like they are important, whether they’ve been good or bad. And if you love them, no matter what they do, they are going to feel more worthy in the long run even if they don’t feel confident in themselves at that time.
