Over the years, I think eating family meals together has declined. More and more people are eating with their dinner on their knee in front of the TV or giving the children their meals and then eating later when their other half has returned from work and the children are in bed. When new houses are built now, they rarely have dining rooms in like they used to. Many have a part of the kitchen or living room that can fit a table, eating around the table together seems to have gone out of fashion which I don’t really like.

There are some beautiful oak dining room furniture from Lifestyle Furniture to fit various spaces including smaller tables and larger tables as well as extending tables so you only use the space when needed. Oak wood is renowned for its strength, natural warmth and beauty, as well as its reassuring durability, oak furniture is the ideal choice for timeless furniture that will only look better the longer it is in your home

I’m not sure whether I liked it at the time but I love that we sat together as a family when we finished school and my parents had finished work and it is something I want to continue with Lucas.

Family meals can be a time when there are no distractions from phones, iPads and the TV. A time where we can talk to eachother properly about what we have been doing in the day, a time where if Lucas needs to, he can tell us anything that is upsetting him.

Eating together also encourages healthy eating, getting into habits of eating the same meals including vegetables. It’s a great place to explore new foods, you could choose some new vegetables in the shop then look for different ways to cook them together before eating and make it into a game.

We don’t eat together at the table often enough. We only ever had hand me down furniture from family, which we were always grateful for. But last year we bought our very 1st oak dining table and chairs. Its lovely…. But currently looks more like a jumble sale table than a dining table! Baby clothes everywhere. I’m trying to have a sort out of the outgrown bits and they’ve all migrated to the table!!

An old-fashioned tradition that should have never gone old. Right! Nowadays, everybody’s busy with anything and rarely have time for eating together as a family. However, when time permits, I always see to it that we have a family meal together at least once a week.

Gosh, I couldn’t agree more. Eating together as a family is incredibly important. I once worked for a company in a small department. On my first day of work the director told me we all eat lunch together. At first I didn’t really want to do this, as it was my first day, but I didn’t want to appear aloof either. My director never took lunch meetings, and if she had to be there she joined us for the last portion of our lunch break. Nevertheless, we all became family just by having lunch together and it was truly lovely.

I used to eat at the table at my mums house growing up and really liked it as we got to spend quality time as a family. I will definately have family meals again when my partner and I have children of our own πŸ™‚

I think it’s so important to keep phones away from the dinner table and turn the telly off too! It’s one of the only times of the day the whole family can sit together.

Couldn’t agree more! As kids, all four of us (brother and sisters) would always eat together, but if there was ever an occasion where my Mum couldn’t/wouldn’t, it felt so weird! I’d even remember one of my younger siblings refusing to eat if my Mum didn’t sit with us!

I never really thought twice about it growing up, but now, I love going back to my parents and eating together around the table. We just talk, appreciate the food and share about our day rather than watch Netflix or be on our phones.

Eating together is extremely important but due to lack of time, shifts and various other factors it can be a rare happening. I do love oak dining room tables and they are very robust for dining on too πŸ™‚ x

I’m with you, it really is important for families to eat together. We try to do it every night, we don’t always succeed but we do most of the time. It’s great to spend time together talking about the day.

I spent 6 years without a dining room table and i hated it! We lived in such a small house that i literally had no room. In the end i decided we needed one and brought a second hand extendable table off facebook! I have never looked back. Family meal times are so important!

I totally agree about sitting down at the table – we always did but weirdly now it’s just me and my partner we don’t really do it often. x

We eat together as a family on weekends and when we can during the week but my toddler tends to have to eat earlier as my husband doesn’t get home until late but it is such a good thing for a family to eat together,

I think family meals are important. One of the biggest reasons we re did our house was to fit a huge table in for plenty of meals like your photo! I’m actually looking for an oak table right now so I’m going to check out lifestyle furniture, thanks for the tip!

Before we moved there was just no room for a table and I hated it! I love family meal times now, and even if I’m not eating with my two I always sit with them xx

We never really ate round the table when I was younger as my parents worked shifts, but I loved the occasions that we did. We’re weaning our son (another Lucas!) so I’m determined to keep the table gadget-free, and use it as a chance to sit down and have a wee catch up πŸ™‚

Couldn’t agree more! The family meal is the one time of day I can be sure that we are all together and focused on one another!

When I lived at home we always had family meals, it’s a great time to catch up and talk. More people just have it in front of the TV alone now which is sad x

We’re in the process of buying our first house and having lived in a flat for years I can’t wait to get a decent dining space and to invite the family over. Thanks for sharing!
