Hamper.com got in touch with me to see if we would like to review* one of their Father’s Day hampers. I hadn’t heard of Hamper.com before so went for a browse on their site in the Father’s Day section. They have a huge selection of hampers to choose from including food hampers, drink hampers, mixed hampers, non alcoholic hampers and even Australian themed hampers.
As it is a Father’s Day gift review, I thought it was only fair to ask D which he would like and he chose the Real Ale and Craft Beer selection. To quote Hamper.com this hamper is to ‘Surprise & delight a loved one or friend with this heavenly selection of the UK’s finest real ales and English Craft Beers. Make a beer lovers day with this fine collection of beers and ales delivered direct to a lucky recipients door. Containing 12 premium beers, this beer gift is suitable for him or for her and for any occasion.’
I am going to get the negative point out of the way now, I think the packaging could definitely be improved. When you go through the hampers, they do clearly state what it will be presented in which is great, some are in wicker baskets, some in trays etc. This one is just in a cardboard carton which I wouldn’t say is something you would present as a gift so bearing that in mind, I would be spending more money after this on a more gift like box or basket myself which would stop me from directly sending to the recipient which I think is one of the main reasons of ordering a hamper already done as you could send to someone you may not get to see.
The ales and beers themselves D was impressed with. The hamper came with 2 Hunters Brewery Bluebeards Revenge ale, 2 Greene King IPA, 2 Adnams Ghost Ship ale, 2 Hunters Brewery Black Jack ale, 2 Hunters Brewery Devon Dreamer ale and 2 Hunters Brewery Premium ale.
The Bluebeards Revenge is made with Citra and East Kent Golding’s hops combined with the finest of British ingredients, the Ultimate Pale Ale is bottle conditioned, unpasteurised and unfiltered, with a strong, uncompromising and proud flavour.
The Greene King IPA has a big, distinctive ‘hoppy’ taste that’s best enjoyed on its own or with curries, Mexican dishes and other spicy foods.
The Ghost Ship is inspired by the eerie wrecks of old smuggling ships along the Suffolk coast, this ghostly pale ale has good assertive pithy bitterness with a malty backbone and a lemon and lime aroma.
The Black Jack won a gold award at the Falmouth Camra Beer Festival in 2011. It is described as well-balanced with an indulgent caramel undertone. Triple hopped using mainly a Bodecia hop with a late addition of a Bramley cross, this stout is brewed with special care at Hunters microbrewery at Ipplepen, South Devon.
The Devon Dreamer is a lighter beer with a floral palette that makes for easy drinking, the Devon Dreamer has a lovely fresh smell and delightful malt flavours that make it a firm favourite of Devon residents
The premium ale is a golden and full-bodied malt beer that makes for a strong pint. The first beer brewed by Hunter’s it features a lovely malty flavour hopped with Goldings, a typically English hop
